F9 Hiring At GFK?

Sat Mar 24, 2007 1:13 am

Howdy all,

When reading our school's weekly newsletter, in the job postings section I noticed that Frontier was hiring ramp agents. It didn't mention where they were hiring and usually if its out of town they'll post that info, so I assume its local. I'm also aware that the city of Grand Forks put out an RFP to several airlines for flying, and in 2008 we'll be getting a new terminal. What's up with the hiring notice?

GFK might be one of the cities targeted by F9 for the DH-400s

I think it's odd that F9 hasn't announced any DH4 cities yet. They are set to be delivered here in a couple months. They better get moving on the route selection.
Good goes around!

Thet can't really announce anywhere, Lynx Aviation does not have its AOC approved yet.

I think they are hoping to start making announcements in the middle of April - but you can't hurry the DOT.

I'm willing to bet F9 would chose FAR first, secondly, checking with F9 themselves, GFK is not a hiring city.

They'd have to compete with UA on the FAR-DEN route, whereas they could have GFK-DEN to themselves. The distance between FAR and GFK is enough that they could probably get some pax from FAR on their flights from GFK if fares were reasonable enough (and the other way around, of course).

May have GFK-DEN to themselves until NW puts a CRJ on it for whatever reason (fine by me, means i can get home faster) But out of FAR they would have a lot more O&D, also unless F9 plans to destroy all fares in ND, then I don't think we will see anything change. FAR and GFK are now the same price to fly out of anymore.

NW couldn't fill a Saab on GFK-DEN without some onward connecting traffic. UA's the only airline that could offer competition to DEN.

checkmark  And there is a reasonably sized group of kids that travels between the Denver area and GFK. On my last DEN-MSP-GFK flight there were a good ten people on the DEN-MSP leg connecting to the same GFK flight (which was full, kinda surprising I thought for a 10pm departure).

F9 will not operate to GFK. And there will not be a new terminal in 2008. NWA is the game and GFK flight support is contracted to work F9 in fantasy land when they come here.

The new terminal if approved will only be started in 2009

What makes you so sure?

At least Frontier has a name in GFK, as well as the other major cities of North Dakota. I flew on the original Frontier many years ago on a fun GFK-FAR-FSD-DEN routing on a 732.
Then Frontier II came in with the same type of aircraft, and found they couldn't make it.....however, with a Q400, with 70 seats, and a reasonable break-even load factor, I wouldn't rule it out just yet.

Quoting Burnsie28 (Reply 6):

Fargo Metro as of 2005: 184,000
Grand Forks Metro as of 2005: 98,000

The one thing I will say is that with a nearby AF Base, they have additional transient bodies. Plus, UND is a more nationally recognized institution (Aerospace, Hockey) that score it some points.

I don't see why Frontier could not send a couple of Q400s there a day?
Why are so many so adamant that it is NO-WAY going to be GFK?
Has any advertising been seen in the Fargo area?

But were all getting worked up over nothing, no one here knows a thing, unless your business card says "Frontier Airlines" et. al. on it.....because:

No, and I never said that they were going to go to FAR.

For one, people are not going to put up with a 3hr flight on a turbo prop, especially with being spoiled with jet service here for the most part.

There are no gates, and NW has had a foothold in GFK for over 40 years now. With all the worldperks fliers and NW would price match, what are people going to choose. More miles and an airline that gets them there in just a bit longer then flying on a turbo prop. A lot of people here love trying to get upgrades as well and F9 can't deliver on that.

Who said it would be necessarily be turboprops? That would be Lynx Aviation, but Frontier Airlines also has the Republic Airlines E170's.

Well, if you were returning from break, there were probably a lot of other students doing the same, and maximizing their time at home by taking the latest flight.

It was only proposed with service by Lynx not Republic.

Since when did people here enjoy flying NW? Everyone I've talked to, unanimously (except you), has said nothing but bad things about NW's service here. Some competition would be welcome.

Quoting Burnsie28 (Reply 12):

Both the GFK gates are common use, you only see NW in them because they're the only airline that flies here. Whenever charters come, they all park at the gates as well.

Grand Forks was one of the cities on the RFP, which went to 65 cities and was for both Lynx and Republic. I believe they have responded positively, but the point remains - so far, no cities from the RFP have been announced.

The stated limit for the Q400 is about 650 miles from DEN. GFK falls within that, but SBA, for example, does not (nor does Huntsville, AL), so they used the RFP to examine all regional flying - both Lynx and Republic. Possibly even some mainline.

Frontier has - politely - asked the DOT to get a move on with the AOC, but the only Lynx hiring has been either in Denver, or, curiously, some at TUL airport.

Until the AOC is granted, Frontier can't really announce which aircraft are going to which new cities. If there is a glitch in the AOC, it would give them problems.

This is the latest filing to the DOT, which contains certain financial information that the DOT would not grant confidentiality, together with the list - five pages long - of the cities that got the RFP.

Not too many charters park at the gates at GFK, they hard stand. Second it takes more than a gate to run a flight. A ticket counter, bag makeup, and bag claim all contribute to the operation. As GFK is made up now, it is a one airline deal. The GFKRAA said themselves that this terminal is too small to house NW alone. If GFK ever intends to get additional service, they must build a new terminal. I'm not ever known to agree with Burnsie, but as of now, GFK is NW and it's gonna stay that way. If you don't like it, you still have options.

Besides, if you want to cut into details, the city of Grand Forks is within the 100mi service area of FAR. Fargo is large enough to pull traffic from GFK but conversely, Grand Forks is not large enough to pull traffic from FAR. If F9 comes to ND for any reason, the NE corner of the state will not feature service from current GFK facilities.
