Insel Air Applies For MIA/FLL-CUR

Sun Mar 25, 2007 1:50 am

Insel Airways has applied with DOT to begin scheduled service to the United States. They mention to DOT they plan to begin service from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to Curacao 1 June, 2007. Good to see AA get competition on this route again. Hope they go for MIA.

How many MD-83's does Insel air operate? That would seem to be a long stage for a Mad dog with 163
seats.

I flew CUR-MIA twice, on now defunct ALM-Antillean Airlines MD80s!

I know it has been done. Along with Dutch Caribbean and Aeropostal as well. I was just wondering
how big a fleet they have. We all know that aircraft take mechanicals from time to time and a
1 aircraft fleet makes it very difficult to plan to delays.

I have heard about Insel Air's application a few weeks ago which is good news. FLL is a nice alternative to MIA as you can avoid all the hazzle at MIA by flying to FLL which is close to MIA as well. FLL is increasingly getting more Caribbean flights it seems because it is a nice alternative compared to MIA. I think Insel Air needs to focus on one of the two cities, MIA or FLL. The advantage of MIA is the connecting possibilities which might be a disadvantage for FLL. Insel Air needs to determine what type of customers they are aiming for, VFR, leisure travellers or more connecting possibilities. If connecting possibilities are important for Insel Air than MIA is obviously the preferred choice but if Insel Air wants to focus on tourists flying between Florida and CUR then FLL may well be more interesting because passengers can avoid the bussy MIA airport. Besides this, MCO is a pretty popular vacation destination among locals from CUR.

Insel Air now operates a single MD83 and a single EMB-110. A second MD83 will eventually join their fleet in April what I have heard. Either ways Insel Air will need a second MD83 if they want to fly to all the destinations they plan on flying to. The CUR-MIA route is not long at all for the MD83 as LM used to fly CUR-JFK nonstop in the past with the MD82 which is much longer. I flew JFK-CUR on LM in '90s which was great!!!
