A380 At IAD

Well, here it is. Unfortunately it arrived at night so no great photos here. This is the best I could do.

I was there for it. Was able to get on the ramp as I'm an airline employee. Was right under the wing almost. The size just blew me away. The wings and the vertical stabilizer are awesome. It was just unreal.. What are the plans for it tommorrow (Mon)?

I was there tonight, too. Just came back from Tokyo via LAX on AA. We were riding the PeopleMover, and there it was parked at B15. I got a really good view of it. The bus driver actualy stopped close to the right wing, and announced to the passengers to take a good look of the plane. The driver then drove slowly passing the A380 so that everyone could take a good look of it.

The plane is massive than photo shows. It also looks beautiful in person than in photo. I am really glad I had an opportunity to see it in person tonight.

There were a few of us that totally ran from the checkpoint to see it come in. I thought it was going to arrive between 9 & 10p, but something told me to just track the flight, and sure enough, 8:22p it said. We rushed to the gate, just in time to see that big girl taxi in. It was so unbelievable for me. I couldn't believe I was actually seeing the A-380 live, and right in front of me. She was a gorgeous, giant girl. I can't wait to fly on one.

Just as a side note on the photo one can see only maindeck catering trucks are used in IAD.

If internal catering lifts on board are used to transfer trolley´s between the main and upperdeck this can easily become critical to turn around times for the A380.

Direct passenger access to the upperdeck is less critical. Airbus claims the 90-minute turnaround can be achieved with using just the two main floor doors. Most airports destined to serve A380s will offer direct passenger access to the upper level.

It's actually not under or even close to the aircraft. I had to take this photo from very far away (daily A parking for those familiar with IAD) so what you are seeing is actually on top of a building (I believe the immigration and customs) closer to us. A380 as was about 600+ yards from me when I took this image...

Just heard that the A380 will make a low-flying pass up the Patomac river on Monday between 11:15 and 12:30 EDT. If you're in the area may want to keep a look-out at lunch.

I heard this a couple weeks ago, but didn't know if it was still on. Does anyone have any info so we can track it on the web and have some notice of when it will be passing by? I've got a decent view from my building...

Edit: My MWAA contact says that it just took off 20 minutes ago for the VIP demo...

Just saw it fly over the Potomac - amazing. I am in Foggy Bottom and I have a southern view towards DCA.

Seeing it lumber low over the river was a nice deviation from the usual stream of A320s, 737s and MD-80s.

Thank you Spoke2Spoke and NW748i for the heads-up!

GAAAH!!! I drove in to work with my camera today to shoot the thing at Dulles, and now I find out that I would have seen it from my office window!

I wish someone could have told me that it was going to fly over DCA before it actually did.

I caught it as well from the Freedom Park in Rosslyn, VA. It flew over a little higher than I expected, but it was nonetheless impressive. There was a helicopter near by that was filming the A380 as it flew by the capital. I'm not sure where you could purchase that film but I'd look for at least a picture later on washingtonpost.com.

Atnight, I'm having trouble with that panoramic pic but I'll try to take a look when I get home tonight.

I just got back from underneath the landing approach at IAD... Very cool. I knew the plane was big, but I am not sure you can appreciate the size unless you see it with your own eyes. It was also quieter than I expected.

I'm on the top floor of a 15 story building in Rosslyn and my office faces north. I've been distracted by work and hadn't heard it would make a pass down the DCA approach. I just happened to look up from my computer and saw it SLOWLY make the turn over Key Bridge toward DCA. It almost looked suspended. I was blown away. It really does look bigger and better in person than on film.

Does anyone know WHY they made that short flight?

I think they are in town partly to show off the A380 to the Airbus North America folks who work nearby to Dulles. Maybe some of the big wigs went on a joy ride?

Here's a link to the takeoff as seen from a channel 4 helicopter. Takes until about 4 minutes left before it starts to move.

I'm so upset. I work in Foggy Bottom, and missed its flyby downtown, so I raced out to Dulles. I exited the toll road JUST in time to see it cross in front of me, but too soon for me to stop and take a photo. It was early!!

And it is ginormous.

Thankyou for the wonderful photos! It's nice to see the different perspectives of the A380 @ the gate and also using a mobile lounge specially made for it which I didn't know they were going to do.

Does anyone have any photos of her sitting at TBIT @ LAX doing gate tests? It will be interesting to see how well she did there.

A380 will leave IAD at 2200 tonite. Did a flight with 200 press/airline exec,etc.. this morning finishing with a low fly by on 19L with two helicopters next to it followed by a landing on 19R. A/C will be towed back to B45 for fueling/boarding and departure back to FRA. Expect takeoff from 19R/1L or 30 (used this morning) due to prefered use of taxiway ZULU.

I saw it today at IAD when I landed around 1030, didn't even expect to see the thing, and it was parked up by the control tower away from the main concourses. First time I've seen the Whalejet and it did look pretty big, particularly the engines which looked almost disproportionately large.

I had a two hour layover and wasn't even aware the thing took off whilst I was at the airport. Guess I should have kept my eyes out of Golf Digest...

I was pretty bummed that I missed the A380 doing the fly-by... couldn't sit next to the window for an hour.  Sad

However, by depression was short-lived because I was at IAD hours later for my "special engagement!!!!" Woooohooooo!!!!

Please do note that these are some of my own shots. Can't provide cabin shots as they were not allowed...

Enjoy, fellas!!!!

I would like to point out that the optical effect in this picture is the same as in person, from most angles.

The United 747-400 looks bigger from a distance because of its proportions.

Just got back from Dulles (my second trip today). I stood in the Costco parking lot, for those familiar with the area, and watched the A380 take off around 10pm. There was no mistaking it - long before you saw it, you heard it. It's not a loud noise that would bother people, I don't think, but rather a loud muted noise that carries far. It definitely makes a lot more noise than the 777 that took off about 20 minutes before it. You could hear it spooling up at the north end of runway 19R all the way in the Costco lot!!

And then it came into view. It is BIIIG. There simply was no mistaking it when it appeared. I yelled out, "that's it!" and another gentleman waiting there exclaimed about at the same time.

I just wish we in DC hadn't been snubbed with a night departure, but I'm glad I got to see it.

RE: A380 At IAD

I landed at IAD, just 40 mins or so before it departed for ????. I got to see it up close on the shuttle that transports pax from the C/D concourse to the main terminal. I started a lot of commotion on the people-mover by pointing it out! haha. lots of oooh's and aaaahhhhhhs.... and rightfully so. Its a massive, amazing plane. And its incredible that something so large can fly. It has this imposing stance and presence. Its so big that, to me, it just makes everything silent but so loud at the same time. Its truly a feat of modern engineering.

I got my bag from my flight from ORD, and as I was walking to my car... I heard a LOUD rumble, and looked up and saw it rotating right off of 19R. Took off at quite a steep angle, and appeared to have no problem climbing quickly. (I'd like to see it fully loaded with pax, bags and fuel.) It then did an immediate right hand 180 degree turn, and flew away from the airport on a northerly heading. What an amazing sight! And I caught it all by chance!

Washington Post has panorama views of the A380 inside and outside that you can manipulate with the mouse on your keyboard using Macromedia Flash player, at This webpage, which you can see if you are a registered member.

Quoting Keesje (Reply 6):
Just as a side note on the photo one can see only maindeck catering trucks are used in IAD.

If internal catering lifts on board are used to transfer trolley´s between the main and upperdeck this can easily become critical to turn around times for the A380.

Direct passenger access to the upperdeck is less critical. Airbus claims the 90-minute turnaround can be achieved with using just the two main floor doors. Most airports destined to serve A380s will offer direct passenger access to the upper level.

Small problem with all that, Keesje -- At IAD, they use buses that rise up to the side door of the aircraft to load and unload passengers. I have been on 747 flights to and from IAD over the years and they took at least 30 minutes to get everyone off and nearly 45 minutes to load them two buses at a time. The reason they had to do two buses is because that was all the available "gates" at the actual terminal. Two buses came out, filled up and then went to the terminal, where they unloaded, came back and got some more. While they did the trip in 15 minutes, each bus moved only about 50-75 pax at a time. With 450 pax, that is between 6 and 9 bus loads.

While it is possible for they to use more buses, there is only a limited number of them available at IAD for all of the flights. So, unless the A380 shows up during off-hours -- which will not be popular with the pax, they will be lucky to get more than two buses to load and off-load.

Now they are planning to get 550 pax off, clean the plane and load another 550 for the return in 90 minutes.

That will be fun to watch, not to mention watching them load the food for the upper floor by way of the lower floor.

If the A380 is to be serious at IAD, someone is going to have to buy additional high-rise equipment for dealing with the beast.
Now so, have ye time fer a pint?

Hardly ever. Lufthansa, for example, will never have to do that.

They do still do that for a small number of flights, but most people leave and arrive to jetways.

The real issue is there's no dual jetways anywhere.

I was in a meeting and completely forgot about it. I had planned to pack my lunch and go to Dulles to watch the whale.

Oh well.

A rather funny story in today's Washington Post about the flyover the A380 did down the Potomac River through DC yesterday afternoon, using the a route similar to the normal river approach to DCA. Apparently, the camera on the tail that passengers onboard may view during flight got impacted by an insect on takeoff from IAD, and remained smudged through the ~80 minute flight! The story refers to the flight as being a successful demonstration, but with just a minor bug.  Smile

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...le/2007/03/26/AR2007032601645.html

An excerpt for those who can't view the full story:

"... Most passengers and reporters agreed that the plane was remarkable and massive. Many complained that they were not able to get the aircraft into a single frame for photographs.

But others questioned whether the A380 was practical and pointed to a minor snafu that highlighted its hulking size.

The jet has cameras mounted at various points outside on the body, allowing passengers to watch the scenery as the A380 hurtles through the air.

On takeoff, a camera atop the plane's tail was struck by a bug. The smashed insect slightly obscured the camera's image. Passengers soon discovered that there was no automated system to clean the lens and watched the entire flight with the image of the insect on their screens.

The lens, about 80 feet above the ground, will be cleaned by a worker with a rag sent aloft on a crane."
