Virgin Wants To Go Double Daily On DXB-LON

Mon Mar 26, 2007 10:30 pm

This is quite interesting! With all the daily flights to London from Dubai and Virgin wants to go Double Daily!!

http://www.arabianbusiness.com/index...-to-double-london-flights&Itemid=1

EK has 8 dailes
BA has 2 or 3 dailies
VS has 1 daily.... soon to be 2
Royal Brunai has 1 daily

These are only the direct flights!!!! Almost 13 - 14... waow

Seems VS is doing extremely well on the Dubai Route!!! This is going to increase the competition and HOPEfully reduce the prices... somehow the ticket price out of Dubai to London is still quite high?

What other desitnations does VS serve double daily?

LHR/DXB/HKG or LHR/DXB/SYD would fit nicely .......

Interesting that they want to double it when they are already the cheapest of the premium carriers on the route (not including Biman and Royal Brunei).

For the sake of convenience they should really offer a flight a day flight from Heahtrow that arrives in Dubai around 11pm or so and then is a red-eye back to London (leave around 1:30am, arrive at Heathrow just after opening time).

Take my case for example - I want to travel DXB-LAX and my primary concern is time savings. For that reason I can't possibly go with VS, because I would leave DXB at 9am, arrive at Heathrow at 1pm and then connect to the Los Angeles flight at 3pm and not arrive at LAX until late in the evening. Contrast that with BA or EK - take a 2am departure, arrive at Heathrow in the morning in time to catch the morning connections and I could be in the City of Angels as early as 1pm!

On the way back, it is even worse - the VS flight doesn't leave until 8pm, which means that it automatically because a two day trip for me to fly from Los Angeles. I have to leave LAX on lets Wednesday, arrive in London on Thursday afternoon, then leave London on Thursday afternoon to arrive in Dubai on Friday morning!

Again - compare with BA, which can get me into Heathrow in time to make the 12:25pm departure to Dubai, getting me in at 11pm and allowing me a full night of sleep before going into work the next morning.

I'm sure my case isn't the only one - it must apply for other trans atlantic connections as well.

BA use a mix of 744/772/763 in the high season and a 744/772 combo in the low season, in an effort I would imagine to cater to the indivdiual customer traffic (and therefore yields) that the different flights attract. Virgin, with only the 744 and 346 would be hard pressed to fill all the seats as the two aircraft do not offer significnatly different capacity. Would be interested if they could put a 343 and 744 on the route - allowing the 343 catering to business travelers and filling the 744's large economy section with tourists and VFR.

Interesting to see how this pans out.

Is VS due to get many aircraft in the not to distant future?? They want to go double daily to DXB and have announced to the press that they want to start flights from Europe to the US........but with what?? Their fleet seems to work pretty hard at the moment and so why make announcements for route expansion when you dont have the fleet to operate it. Didn't they want to go double daily to HKG but that was shelved due to lack of aircraft. Would another flight to DXB really be worth it due to the large amount of flights already operating there??

Well they're an established 346 operator so I'm sure if they had a nice word with Airbus...

Also don't forget the 380s coming relatively soon which will free up some 346s.

- Was it not just last week that VS defered additional 346 deliveries?

If so, what are they up to??

What is the latest update for VS's first A380 delivery? How many 346s do they have on order?

I hope Branson's successful with his double daily plan!
But before that happens, they need to sort out the fact that all VS flights in DXB use remote stands. Very annoying, anyone know why they don't use aerobridges like EK and BA do?

Any guesses as to what the flights times of the second daily would be? I think it will be
LHR-DXB arrive during the midnight peak period, and returning around 2am to arrive 6-7am in the morning at Heathrow.

By the way, does anyone remember when the DXB route was launched, the flight left DXB at 1400 local to arrive at LHR at 1900? Do you think the second daily might use these times?

Interesting that you point that out. Whenever I have seen Virgin at Dubai the aircraft has always been parked away from the main building, but I never put two and two together.

Wonder if its because the A340-600 is too long for the main parking area?

I beleive that the A380s are booked for 2013!

According to the O&D spreadsheet at Airbus they ordered 20 and taken delivery of 14 - so 6 more - these were deferred though. Strangely they are listed as have 19 operational - does that mean that they got 5 second hand?

I also beleive that they've got some planes out on loan to Virgin Nigeria so they may pull one or two of those back to run this new service

Emirates and Virgin have been involved in a strong battle for the lucrative business class market on this route

This could be one reason (amongst others) why EK will deploy the A345 to LHR ... ?!?!

Do you think this could be the reason? I thought they were either being cheap, or DXB airport authority had denied them an aerobridge so EK still had an edge over VS.

I wonder how soon a double daily service would start, before the end of the year maybe?

What plane are they using on this route? An A340-600? What will the second daily be operated by?

On an other point, what routes are the A380's for VS going to serve?

Three (or more?) are leased from ILFC. (None is second hand.) VS have a fleet of 24 A346s in operation, leased or ordered - though whether they'll eventually take them all is a moot point.

Just had a closer look at the spread-sheet and VS received a new A346 at the end of Feb via ILFC which could be where they're getting the seats for this new service?

I don't think that, because the -600 is insignificant longer than a B777-300ER (75,30m compared to 73,86m). The wingspan is the same like the -500 so this isn't the problem either.

Must be something else! Maybe the lack of gates during their operation time?

Could they be earmarking the aircraft used on the London- Nassau service as this route is withdrawn on 16/17 April, to provide the extra capacity, or is this already earmarked for something else?

I doubt it has anything to do with DXB authorities giving EK an edge over VS by having their aircraft park at the remote stand. Why not have BA do the same as well?

The time of day that VS gets into DXB is right in the middle of EK's early morning arrival bank. I have flown countless times on EK's JFK flight last year that gets into DXB around the same time and not once have we deplaned through an aerobridge.

As for BA, i am not sure why (if so) they always get an aerobridge. I would like to think it's first-come-first-serve at DXB ...But i'm not sure.

The time that VS flies from is one of the busiest times in DXB. The airport is like a madhouse and there arent enough gates. But, someone else told me that not using the airbridge can save the airline a lot of money.
