85 Sick Pax On CO Flight Arriving At EWR From HKG

Tue Mar 27, 2007 5:00 am

CNN reported at about 4 pm today that a flight from Korea arrived a short time ago (Monday, March 26) at EWR from with 85 sick passangers. They were complaining of flu-like syptoms on it. No further info at this time. May be food posioning. (Guess they shouldn't have had the fish).

Message too short
The message you were about to post is too short and probably not of any higher value to the topic at hand. You should think long and hard before posting a message in this forum and make it detailed and a valuable addition to the topic discussed.

Avoid posting "Me Too" messages. These are messages that are posted by people who agree to a point being discussed and post a one liner, "me too!", "Good post Jim!", "I disagree" or similar message. This takes up time as readers must sort through these messages which have no real value to the group at large. Any message containing nothing more than a line or two of text is probably not worth posting.

If you have an opinion on a topic, you should in detail express why you have the opinion and what made you come to that conclusion.

So what happens when the plane gets to EWR? Do they quarantine it? Do they bring the pax to a hospital and keep them there?

Correction as just noted at 4:25 pm on CNN - it was a CO flight from Hong Kong. (also corrected the title) A f/a noticed a group of pax with flu-like symptoms. Doctors and EMT's from The NJ (Univeristy) College of Medicine Hospital in Newark has been called to the airport and will probably deal with the sick pax. Apparently most of the 85 sick pax were on a river cruise some where in Asia and that may be the source of the illness.

Malaria is not a big cause for concern when traveling in mainland China...although bird flu is. I'm sure the CDC is on alert right now.

Just spoke with a crew member who worked the flight. There were about 80 or so people who weren't feeling well (coughing and the like) and as a precaution, authorities were called in. Standard thing to do. Too many variables to not be cautious.

MSNBC is reporting that the authorities are detaining all passengers on the flight while they determine the source of the illness. Interesting note -- the destination of the 80 (says MSNBC) passengers reported to be ill is Montreal. Montreal was of course the biggest site for the SARS epidemic back in 2003. Watch out Montreal!

I hope they determine the cause quickly so the other passengers can either get treatment or be on their way. What a fright for them all!

The flight arrived at EWR about 2 pm, and the passangers were released about 4 pm, after doctors at EWR checked with the Centers for Disease Control. There were 272 total pax on the flight. Apparently the crises is over for now. I suspect that the ill pax will be followed up for any further problems and the a/c given a extra special cleaning to remove any possible germs.

The survival of everyone on board depends on just one thing: finding someone on board who can not only fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner.

There are a couple of things wrong with this statement. First, it was in Toronto where in Canada the SARS epidemic was most prominent. Second and most importantly, the SARS problem was from ASIA where it killed thousands of people before it was even brought to Canada. Of course you probably got your information from "americas most trusted source in news" ,CNN.

Imagine sitting on a plane in economy class, with 85 passengers around you being sick. Did the CO crew do anything to quarantine these sick passengers by putting them in the back of the plane or something?

It is interesting to note that something similar happened on a CO flight from EWR to DUB recently. In that case a group of 32 students from NYC had eaten in a restaurant in NYC and it is felt that it was something there. The aircraft was "quarantined" for a few hours while pax were checked out, eventually 5 were taken to hospital. It pretty much faded from the news quite quickly.

A prophylactic refers to any measure used to prevent a disease or condition, not merely condoms. Everything from antibiotics to having your teeth cleaned can be referred to as a prophylactic.

I know.  Wink But as with so many of the other things in life even a topic like this needs some tongue-in-cheek humor... however you will note that I do not add racial or ethnicity related humor, as many, many have on here. This post has been no different in that arena (sushi and kimchi remarks... not to mention something about surgical maskes being made in China?) Crass and uncalled for really. Can we get back to the topic at hand and someone enlighten all of us as to what really happened and if anyone knows what the affliction was... instead of imparting socially awkward or inapproproate remarks of racial origin?
