JQ Domestic To Acquire 9 More Airbus A320

Tue Mar 27, 2007 6:19 pm

Apparently a big Jetstar Domestic announcement is due within weeks....

JQ said recently that is has finished focusing on International expansion and will focus on domestic expansion once again.

There's rumours floating around that they may open a new PER CC base (increase PER-AVV too) or acquire A321/A319/A318s for domestic expansion into places like BME. I have also heard that JQ is looking at acquiring some JetBlue A320s, although, knowing nothing about the airline, cannot say whether this could happen or not.

While there will be a Jetstar announcement within weeks, at this stage information is limited and I guess we can only speculate.

Anyone heard anything?

What do they currently use for domestic operations - is it Airbii or 737s?

They use A320's, as QF mainline use 737's

Thanks - that's interesting that one branch uses one type and the parent company uses a differant.

I can confirm this rumor. I've heard from a very reliable source that this could happen (more aircraft). I'm not going to go into much more detail right now, but if anyone else knows what I know then feel free

Why is QF trying to increase it's domestic low cost market? Is it to take more market share away from virgin blue?

I think it'd be great if they focused more on QF mainline

A318s

That would be fun to see, something to compete with DJ's upcoming embraers. However, I believe they will only keep to A320's, so fleet routing will be easier. If not, I hope they get some A321's as well for the more 'full' routes. JQ A318 through A321 would be cool.

This has already been discussed to death, but JQ use different equipment from QF (320's vs 737's) as JQ staff are employed under different conditions to those working for QF mainline, JQ has a different operating certificate from QF. In other words, this enables JQ staff to be paid at a lower rate.

Qantas isn't trying to increase its market share, JetStar is! The differance is real, JQ is a seperate company (the old Impulse body corporate) with its own board of directors. Yes it is 100% owned by the Qantas Group, the board of which sets the major policy points, of course, but normal business activities are quite seperate, it is the JQ board & company that is concentrating on the low cost domestic market NOT the QF board & company, which look after mainline.

Yeah I understand they're two different companies, but if QF didn't want JQ to expand, JQ wouldn't be expanding. That's all I'm saying. I was wondering why QF is promoting it's LCC growth

Maybe QF will do a BA and basically be an international operation with all domestic slack being taken up by JQ?

I still think you miss the point. It is not that QF WANT JQ to expand, its that they don't stop them expanding. So JQ expanding takes no time and resources from mainline. Of couse, you are correct in saying that if QF did not want JQ to expand it wouldn't, and I belive it's not letting JQ expand as fast or in all the directions it wants to eg MEL.

Tiger....

second half of the year is going to be a bloodbath in Australia.
excellent for consumers though.

JQ is trying to get up to 13 A320s. Good luck finding them boys.

Unless they have the aircraft, they will not be able to compete on new routes that Tiger opens.

Qantas Group Boosts Domestic Fleet

Quote:
Qantas Airways said today it would acquire nine additional Airbus A320 aircraft for use by Jetstar.

The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said the new aircraft would be deployed on domestic and short-haul international routes.

"The aircraft will be delivered over a 15-month timeframe from late 2007," he said.

Mr Dixon said Qantas would also boost capacity in the Qantas domestic operations.

"Four Boeing 767-300 aircraft from our international fleet that were due to be sold from mid-2007 will now be transferred to domestic operations.

"The additional capacity for both Jetstar and Qantas, along with previously announced plans for QantasLink, should enable the Qantas Group to maintain its 65 per cent share of the Australian domestic market."

Mr Dixon said the additional A320 aircraft would enable Jetstar to grow on some of its most popular leisure routes including Cairns, Gold Coast, Perth and the Northern Territory.

"Jetstar will also use the new aircraft to look at new destinations within Australia."

This seems to be a too short time to be newly ordered aircraft. Leasing perhaps?

No I don't think so. Doesn't that QF press release basically say that QF is in control there.. ?

QF controls JQ totally in every way shape and form. Sure JQ may be free to make small day to day decisions, but anything as major as fleet increases and route changes will NO DOUBT be made in discussion with Dixon & Co (discussion meaning do as Geoffy says).

As other posters have stated JQ is a seperate structure mainly so pay rates can be reduced in comparison to QF mainline.

Won't be so hard if they are A321s. Don't think the backlog on that line is anywhere near as long as the 319/320 line?

Actually, I think you will find the cabin crew do controls the airline, then QF, then JQ.

But regarding planes, well, the press release is on the QF website before the JQ one. Sure, isn't it a Qantas Group Airline.  Smile

It's my understanding 6 A320s will come from JetBlue and 3 from Jetstar Asia (or the Turkish Airline the 3K A320s are on lease to). This would explain the quick delivery time.

Wonder if Jetstar will add additional PER-AVV flights as well as take over QF services to Noumea (New Caledonia) from Brisbane and Sydney?

Sorry, 6 of the A320s will come from ILFC and not JetBlue as mentioned (incorrectly) above!

6 - ILFE
3 - 3K (Jetstar Asia)

Basically the 318/319/320/321 are made on the same line, even while final assembly is split up between Hamburg and Toulouse. So basically the backlog is the same for any type. The only reason a certain plane can be delivered earlier is if Airbus is already assembling these airframes for a cancelled order, or when they are keen to sell a certain subtype to a certain airline offering earlier deliveries then it would do in another case.
In this case it are second hand frames though.
