Kingfisher Airlines Set For US Launch

Tue Mar 27, 2007 11:46 pm

http://ia.rediff.com/money/2007/mar/27king.htm

Domestic private carrier Kingfisher Airlines, impatient to launch international services, will in the next six to eight weeks apply for launching an airline in the US that would enable it operate flights into India.

"Our detailed application is being compiled by our attorneys and it will be submitted in the next six to eight weeks," Kingfisher Airlines chief Vijay Mallya said when asked about the status of his plans.

"Thereafter, it will take another six months to get the necessary clearances" for launching the airline, he said.

He said the domestic airline, which has ordered Airbus A340-500 aircraft among others, planned to start long-haul international operations after this wide-bodied plane is inducted.

Well, Virgin America just set a precendence and laid out a nice road map on how foreign investors can setup an airline in the US so I think, if Vijay Mallya is really serious about this, it can be done. The big question is whether he really wants to do this or is he just bluffing in order to get the Indian authorities to fasttrack his application for international service.

Gee, whomever could you mean. . .  sarcastic . If he can meet US ownership requirements (whether you like them or not, they are the law, so no since wasting time whinging about them), more power to him.

Everything I've read indicated he's basing his US Ownership claim on relatives in the US. Considering DOT required Fred Reid be removed simply because he was hand selected by Branson, I can't see a direct relation of Mallya passing the sniff test.

If that's the case then this sounds more like posturing to pressurize the Indian govt to get its act together.
Incredible India!

Outsiders looking in think that the US is the land of milk and honey and indeed it is in most things, but it is also extreme cut-throat competition. Come on over and you will get a real eye opener in the 'dog-eat-dog' world!! In the overall scheme of things, I venture to say that the lowest seat mile costs of any country are in the USA.
