Word is that Boeing might have two 787 at the unveiling ceremony.

Paris would be a nice location -- central to most of the western European countries. Failing that, Italy where a good chunk of the 787 is built would be a good place.
Now so, have ye time fer a pint?

Does anyone know if all the fuselage barrels will be joined at Paine field or are some being joined in Charleston, SC?
I wish that we could see more current shots of the progress.

It is a news story because Boeing launched the 787 Press website and media registration today.

I filled out my info as soon as I got the email, don't want to get left behind Big grin

How would they get it to Europe to roll it out as it is expected to fly "at the end of August" - nice one keeping the dates vague then it's harder to be pilloried for missing your targets!

If it is, then I should be able to watch it, since the 8th is a Sunday which hopefully means no work, but I don't have the official calendar yet, but  crossfingers .

I also can't wait to see it at Farnborough in 2008.

No one is keeping the rollout date vague. The person who said this I'm sure was kidding.

Quoting Sphealey (Reply 4):

In the US, our date July 8, 2007 is 7/08/07 and in Europe it's not written this way until August 7 or 07/08/07 thus creating two rollout dates with the date 7/8/07. Don't worry if Boeing says it will rollout on 7/8/07 it will be July 8. It surely wouldn't be much of a "rollout" in Europe after it's already been rolled out and flown would it?

Too bad it isn't flying until August. If it were it could the cap to Ultimate Boeing Flying Challenge where you fly a real flight operated on the corresponding Boeing aircraft to the day in July.

Will be tough, but we will see what we can do.

Rollout events are a tough gig. Thankfully the light should be good...if the event ends at 4:30 then we should be shooting around 5:30, of course early July the weather can be bad here in Seattle, but we will have our fingers crossed.

Hopefully there won't be any problems when Boeing starts assembly, otherwise this might not only delay the roll out date but service entry. From the large number of orders, the 787 is an excellent product that customers want and may be willing to be more flexible than with the A380 if engineering problems arrise between now and 2008.

Works well for Boeing - they can claim "on time" in the US and "a month ahead of schedule" in the rest of the world. About time our dating quirk was of benefit.

The other PR hit would be if Boeing could manage the maiden flight on August 7th . . .

It might be a little earlier than Aug. 31st but it all depends on preparations and all the pre-flight testing that has to be done.

When I asked corporate to date all my international paperwork as 08 Aug.07 , they first said I was joking. After a few meetings using documents & dates from overseas the new method was mandatory ! Of course dates in the Muslim calender really messed them up.

I'm amused on the discussions on "787" and dates... let's put it this way, the fact it will be rolled out on time on a memorable date is pretty cool.

Now to head over the AA 787 discussion...

The subject of dates appeals to the pedagogue in me. The United States, as a former colony of Britain, continued to use British spelling and conventions for dates and such well into the 1800's. However, by 1835 there was a ground swell against British usages as being too tied to the "Old Country" so a movement arose to create an "American Standard." By 1845 most of the institutions in the American North had started using the newly-created "American" spellings--dropping the "u" in colour, using an S and a Z in words like Defense and Cozy--as well as writing dates as March 29, 1848 rather than the previous 29th March 1848. By 1860 most people in the North would abbreviate the date as 3/29/48 instead of the traditional 29/3/48.

Notice I said in the American North. The South, being much more conservative and closer to the British in all ways, continued to use the British styles until well after the Civil War. When I was in a school history/spelling bee in 1960 I was asked for the name of Robert E. Lee's horse. I wrote down Traveller and the judge marked me wrong since he said it should only have one "L." I protested that Masa Rob was a Southern gentleman who spelled his horse's name in the traditional British way. The Yankee carpet bagger insisted it was Traveler and marked it wrong anyway. Sigh.

When the US entered WWII and our military began working closely with the British there was so much confusion over the use of dates that GEN Eisenhower ordered all US forces under his command to write dates as 29 Mar 42 and banned the use of abbreviating dates with numbers. That caught on in the American military so to this day the military uses both a 24 hour clock and writes dates as day/month/year. Some other government agencies, like the FAA, also customarily write dates in the "European Format" but the State Department still uses March 29, 2007.

Uh huh and where is McDonnell Douglas now? It was McD lack of innovation that forced it out of the commercial airline business. It's the 787 that's helping Boeing kick Airbus' butt. The MD-11 a failure as a commercial aircraft. Get real dude.

Quoting GRIVely (Reply 33):
When I was in a school history/spelling bee in 1960 I was asked for the name of Robert E. Lee's horse. I wrote down Traveller and the judge marked me wrong since he said it should only have one "L." I protested that Masa Rob was a Southern gentleman who spelled his horse's name in the traditional British way.

When I was young enough to take part in spelling bees, I sure didn't have such a history awareness. A bit nerdy, but well done.

Quoting BN727 (Reply 38):
If I had Paul Allen money...I'd start Allen Aircraft and build it all in Seattle without politically correct world components...Wings built in Japan? No Way...I'd bulid 100 percent made in USA like Boeing did before selling out...100 percent like a Harley Davidson....Jets American style...Oh Yeah!

Quoting BN727 (Reply 44):
not so exciting, not so made in America...Just assembled here. Japanese wings

And you'd sell maybe a dozen jets total. I'm afraid everything you own or travel in has a significant amount of un-American bits and pieces (including your Harley). Even the sticker of the stars and stripes on your car window was made in Taiwan.
The nice thing about a mistake is the pleasure it gives others.
