HAHA DL had only 5 747-100's in the 70's. They got rid of the last on april 16th 1977.

DL 747 (The News Media Strikes Again)!

Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:02 am

The news organizations do it all the time.

Just recently on the local TV news about some minor incident involving AA and they showed an AA 727 taking off, so that footage was at least 6 years old.

The DL's 747 was one of the nicest looking 747s out there at the time. Flew on them a few times on the night coach from SFO to ATL.

DL 747 (The News Media Strikes Again)!

Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:41 am

Only 30 years out of date. DL sold the last of their 5 747-100s in April 1977.

Reminds me of a fairly recent CNN or BBC item on DL which featured stock video featuring DL L1011s and B727s all in the widget livery.

Must have borrowed that stock footage from WSB, one of the local stations here in Atlanta. Some of the file footage they use in the local media here is so old, I've half expected to see a Valujet or even an Eastern jet in the footage!

The media never get anything right with regard to airline/aircraft photo/footage. Why is this seen as a surprise? You would think that the media, in all their wisdom and access to information, that they would want to be held in the highest degree of truth and information.

We see file footage of UA 727s all the time here in Chicago during stories about UA or ORD. In fact, yesterday WBBM-TV aired some file footage of some BAe 146s/Avro RJs in UA colors in a story about this new plan to alieviate some severe weather backups this summer at ORD.

As seen above, I wonder if the photo was taken from Airliners.net or did the photographer authorize use?

Hawker Trident

Not to nitpick, but it's a BA Hawker-Siddeley Trident, then the primary BA intra-Europe jet type along with the BAC 1-11, both types inherited from British European Airways at the time of the merger with BOAC to form British Airways. The merger was implemented March 31, 1974, just 2 months before that photo was taken.

The Trident is in the new BA livery. The 747 behind DL appears to be an ex-BOAC 747-100 still in BOAC livery but probably bearing BA titles on the fuselage, as in the 3rd photo below. The first photo shows two of the three Trident models, the longer-range Trident 2 in the foreground, and the stretched Trident 3 (still in BEA livery with BA titles) behind the BAC 1-11-500. A BA L1011-1 used within Europe is also visible at far left.

The second photo is also interesting as it includes one of BA's 737-200s in the foreground. BA was a rather late 737-200 customer with the first delivery in December 1980. The second photo was taken after they dropped "Airways" (or more correctly, "airways" as they used a lower-case "a") from the livery, and enlarged the "British". As I recall, that change was rather controversial.

That's funny you say that. I was in ATL in early February, the NBC affiliate (I think 11) did a piece on the airlines in the business segment. They had an Eastern Metro Express J-31 in turning into position with an Eastern A-300 (gray scheme) behind the commuter.

Going back in time.

We all know the media is terrible with aviation (among numerous other things, but that's for non-av!), but I don't think this is a huge deal. That picture suits their non-aircraft/incident specific article just fine.

Yes, apart from AA's 16 747-100s bought new in 1970-71, AA also bought 2 of TWA's 3 747SPs in 1987, mainly for their new DFW-NRT route as AA had nothing else in their fleet then with enough range. They sold the SPs in 1992-93 after their first few MD-11s had been delivered.

Apart from those mentioned above, quite a few other US carriers operated 747s including TWA, Continental, Braniff, National, Eastern (briefly, leased from Pan Am), People Express, Tower Air and World Airways. All now defunct except CO and World. And that excludes 747 freighter operators such as FedEx, UPS, Flying Tiger and several smaller cargo carriers.

HP got four second hand B742s from KL in 1989/1990 and they started a PHX-HNL-NGO service in the early '90s.

The airline was added to the list by Ikramerica.

It reminds me of a TV movie I saw in the 70's-in depicting an airline flight it showed a 747 taking off, a 707 in flight, and a 727 landing. I may be wrong in the order, but it was very clearly 3 different plane types. At least they were all Boeing.

I'd have to go back and check my Delta timetables, but I believe Delta only had one 747 flight from ORD-MIA, not three. When you think about the fact Delta only had five 747s, and they were flying to Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Detroit, Jacksonville and possibly a few other cities, it doesn't seem possible they could have three daily flights on any one route.

How long did those last for both AA and DL? Sometimes airline senior executives make stupid mistakes just as the news media does!  biggrin
I must admit I can't help but laugh at the news media when they dig up 10+ year old footage and pic's of aircraft. I can't believe even local outlets as was pointed out in ATL earlier, SLC isn't immune to such gaffs either. I can't count the number of times I've seen 727s and Tri-Stars in the old widget livery departing or arriving at SLC on local media here whether it's the Salt Lake Tribune or KSL. It's why journalists are often on the same page as executives.  laughing

This should be crystal clear to people that when the general public (read: not anybody reading this thread) thinks about Delta, they think about the Widget livery. Hopefully, for their brand's sake, they will be able to resurrect that livery in one form or another.

Quoting Ayubogg (Reply 23):
This thread got me thinking of all the national carriers here in the US that have and/or have had any member of the 747 as part of their fleet
United Airlines
Northwest Airlines
Delta Airlines
PanAm

Braniff International had 747-100's a 200 and 747 SP's. Gone but not forgotten. Once the 7th largest airline in the United States. Continental had 747's, Tower had 747's TWA....the list goes on
