How Important Is A New Livery?

how important is a new livery?

should an airline refresh after bad times? i.e. united, delta on its way, continental from its old 70's look to todays? does it show the world a commitment to the future or does it waste money during hard times?

should varig be next or should it remain true to its glory days? is it time for iberia and aerolinas argentinas to enter this century and leave the 60's behind? or are they classics.

is it something we all see but the average flyer couldnt care less?

what's your opinion?
I prefer flying over the vacation itself! I go on business trips just so I can fly!

I think the whole point of a new livery is to refresh the airlines image and hopefully try to appeal to the general public more.

As a promotional tool, I think the value of liveries is very limited. Precisely because the buying decision has been made when the liveries are in view -- i.e. when you're already at the airport. Additionally, key buying parameters are available of city pair / routing, availability of seats, pricing, frequent flier program, etc.

Now when used in conjunction with a major overhaul or repositioning, I think it can be effective to underscore the effort.

I that airlines with big fleets: AA, WN, UA, BA, can not benefit from livery manipulation as the time required to put a new look on a majority of its fleet can take years. Further, when you're in the middle of a renewal, parts from one livery to another on the same plane look stupid or give the impression that the maintenance is a bit tatty. I'm sitting in Shanghai looking at a UA 747 in its new livery with a radome carrying the old livery.

Special livery planes have a very different status.

I think for Delta, a new livery is needed to make a break from two very irresponsible management regimes that took them into bankruptcy. This is largely why UA decided to go with a new one a couple of years ago.

The 60's behind? Ar livery is from 2002 or 03 I'm not sure, and IB is from 1979/80. And I don't see a problem at all with IB livery, it's different and very recognisable ( one of the major points of having a livery, right?). Same AF, KL, AA and LH.
Too bad JAL don't use the tsuru anymore.

It is very important. Livery gives a certain statement and change of it shows that airline is doing its best to keep fresh and new. Old liveries are great, some of them lived longer than anyone could have predicted it when they were introduced once, like old Varig, Ethiopian, Alitalia, etc. but there is a time when they need same "correction".

On the other hand, what would you think of an airline that doesn't care about its corporate image? For example, JAT has some huge livery problems. Until late last year, their entire fleet was all white with small title stickers, registration ans a flag. Parked next to a nice BA or SU, it gives bad signs to potential passengers.
