BA Newark To Heathrow Via JFK?

Mon Apr 02, 2007 8:10 am

According to http://flightaware.com, BA 186 that left EWR on 31 March was flightplanned

JFK YAHOO DOVEY 4200N 06000W ... and so on (YAHOO is southeast of Nantucket)

That sounds unlikely, routing a Newark transatlantic departure over the JFK VOR. I can't seem to find the flightaware flight track for that flight-- anybody know if it really did that?

Doesn't look like it according to the flight track - although it's hard to tell since the scale is so small.

It wouldn't be completely unusual though, I've had a few UK-bound departures out of EWR 22R that turned left after takeoff and headed out over Long Island before turning more north. And in any event, it could just have that filed as part of the flight plan but be controlled under ATC vectors for the first portion of the flight.

Nope. It's still out of EWR. The filed flghtplan must have had the flight pass over the JFK VOR after departure and on southeast to YAHOO. From the map, it looks like the flight actually used the MERIT departure, rather than what they originally had filed probably due to weather or something else. Looks like they followed this departure to BOS VOR, where they went to their original plan.

I don't see any reason why not, depending on the altitude.

I can't count the number of times I've passed over IAD to or from DCA.

On the return trip from Montreal a couple years ago our Eagle ERJ-135 passed directly over EWR at a pretty low altitude and headed South towards Lower NY Harbor where we made a 180 over the Leonardo section of Monmouth County back towards JFK.

JFK as in the Kennedy VOR/DME, not JFK airport.

N40 37 58.4 W073 46 17.0

The world of aviation DOES NOT operate in IATA codes.

The proper filing for "DOVEY" is

EWR..DIXIE.V276.PREPI..OWENZ..LINND..DOVEY

However EWR frequently will rer-route you over MERIT to the north to avoid arrivals to JFK/EWR from the south in the WATRS region.

Unless it was in the middle of the night I don't see a EWR dept flying over JFK.

Remember that you can file any route but that doesn't meen you will get it.

I bet it has to do with the NAT used.

Due to so many departures out of the NYC area, pilots have to file 'shortcuts' in order to reduce departure delays. If you look here at the 'shortcut advisories' for departures out of EWR of April 1:

AIRCRAFT DEPARTING EWR PLEASE FILE THE FOLLOWING TO MINIMIZE
DEPARTURE DELAYS GOING TO EUROPE:
TRACK R/ EWR..GREKI..JUDDS..MARTN..QUBIS.N211C.YDP.TRAKR
TRACK S/ EWR..GREKI..JUDDS..MARTN..QUBIS.N197C.HO.TRAKS
TRACK T/ EWR..GREKI..JUDDS..MARTN..TAFFY.N177C.FOXXE.TRAKT
TRACK U/ EWR..MERIT..HFD..PUT..TOPPS.N161E.VALIE.TRAKU
TRACK V/ EWR..MERIT..HFD..PUT..TOPPS.N149B.STEAM.TRAKV
TRACK W/ EWR..MERIT..HFD..PUT..EBONY.N135B.REDBY.TRAKW
TRACK X/ EWR..MERIT..HFD..PUT..BOS..WHALE.N23E.JAROM..BOBTU.TRAKX
TRACK Y/ EWR..DIXIE.V276.PREPI..OWENZ..LINND..DOVEY.TRAKY

I'm not sure since I couldn't find the NATs for that specific day, but my guess is they were filed from EWR directly to the JFK VOR and from there on to their north atlantic track.
Why is 10 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9.
