United Not Offering Seat Assignments

Mon Apr 02, 2007 10:07 am

United had flight 108 LAX-ORD on 4/14 on a 767-300ER in international configuration, so I booked it because of that. What's the chance that it could get switched to a domestic configuration? Does UA swap the planes much?

After a while on the phone, I found that United could not issue seat assignments for this flight for me. It apparently switched from a 3-class to something else and my business class seat turned into an economy one or at least the seat assignment changed according to the website. Does anyone know how that could happen?

Thanks for the advice.

There is no UA108 LAXORD...no 108 at all that I can find. However there is a 106 leaving at 0900 showing as a 767-300....would that be what you are talking about? That is a two class aircraft. 940 at 1101 is a 3 class bird...116 later is a 2 classer again. That help?

Sometimes if you can't change a seat online, they can do it for you if you call a reservations center. I have a US Airways itinerary like that right now, where I can't change it online (in my case, it is because I bought it through a student travel agency).

If it makes you feel any better, SQ does not assign seats (at least not in Business) until you check in (online or at the airport). I got to chose my seats on UA's SIN-HKG flight this coming Friday and on the return on Sunday.

Yes that is correct.

Well see that's the problem. I tried online when I noticed my seats went from row 8 to row 12 without me doing anything. The website didn't allow changes. And then to make matters worse, I call up the reservations people and they can't change them. They say that they are available at the gate only. I think that's really odd. I've never had trouble getting seat assignments before. What makes matters worse is that the first class cabin appears only to have 5 of the 36 seats filled, so something with the computer system is blocking people from getting seat assignments. It seems odd to me.

I have had this happen on UA before. If they cancel your original booked flight and re-route you onto another flight, you can confirm your flight online but not your seat. Actually I was not able to confirm my seat until I got to the airport, reservations was not able to do it either.

Hey RoseFlyer, just a recommendation - can you not title a thread with a blanket statement like "United Not Offering Seat Assignments" which suggests that United has suddenly stopped offering seat assignments on all flights. Perhaps you could reword it more appropriately to "United Changed My Confirmed Seat Assignment" or something like that.

Dont take this in the wrong way, I'm just a UA fan and had to raise an eye brow when I saw your thread title cause I just booked a UA flight to BOS and definitely got to choose my seats  bigthumbsup

80% of the time I fly on Intl configured widebodies on UA, they can not issue a seat assignment until check in. If I were you, I would be thinking that everything is normal and good to go.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'm not the first person to have trouble. It must be some form of computer glitch system that they have.

Sorry abou that. I put a request deletion in, but I don't know if the mods would change it.

SQ will give you a pre-assigned seat in First and Business if you call them and ask for it, though they don't typically hand one out unrequested at time of booking the way that many US carriers do. They (and many other airlines in that part of the world) generally don't pre-assign Economy seats.

Looks like your 767-300 was changed from a 3-cabin to a 2-cabin 34F/210Y configuration during the most recent schedule change. As a result you were probably downgraded to Y and my guess is that Y is oversold and there are no more pre-assigned seats to give out. I believe 4/14 is spring school vacation week in many parts of the country, so that might explain why it's oversold, if it is. Anyhow, make sure you get to the airport as early as you can, or use Easy Check-in online 24-hours before your flight, so you can get a seat. If not, you may arrive at the airport and get a BP-2 "departure management" card and have to wait for what seats are left, if any, 20 minutes before departure.
