EK To Shift One DUS Flight To CGN...?

Mon Apr 02, 2007 4:44 pm

As reported in a German aviation forum,EK have apparently decided to shift one of the two DUS flights as of October 2007 to CGN.
Cologne airport -only about 50 Km from DUS,does not impose night-flight restrictions and has a major cargo-base.
The runway in CGN is nearly 4000 meters and the airport has been trying to catch more intercontinental flights recently.
There is no official confirmation yet,but the move would make sens, since EK have clearly announced they would be targeting more German airports other than FRA,MUC,DUS and HAM.
Currently the legal situation does not allow EK to increase their number of flights to Germany.

Apart from CGN what other airports can they really go after? Berlin?

Stuttgart has to be next, it could easily support a daily 332.

But whats the point in serving Stuttgart if Frankfurt is 20-30miles down the road?

Frankfurt-Stuttgart is 200 km "down the road".

DUS/CGN is roughly in the 20-30 miles category and it does not make sense indeed to shift a flight to CGN.

I realize the post was edited 1 April - but it would be fully in-line with previous statements from EK in Germany, that they will not limit their presence to the current four airports.
While it might be too early for that particular move from DUS to CGN ,the issues of traffic rights will remain an obstacle in the immediate future.Their heavy presence in the UK (currently five-soon six airports) are in indication of their strategy.
All interesting airports above 5 Million passengers /year are on their target list.

Absolutely not. CGN is a UPS hub, DHL routes their Mid East cargo via BAH and interlining between FX and EK might take place in DXB, but hardly in CGN.

EK is a strong cargo carrier and whatever they cannot get from the local market ius usually trucked. CGN loco freight is trucked either to DUS or to FRA.

Emirates029, as kindly pointed out by panHAM, it is a little further than 20-30 miles between FRA and STR.

EK serve both BHX and MAN, a mere 66 miles apart. EK will go into STR at some point.

I was on an aviation conference in Frankfurt last week, organised by DVWG (German transport research society) (www.dvwg.de).

A spokesman of Lufthansa said that additional traffic rights for EK would cause negative welfare effects...

A spokesman of the German ministry of transport said that during forthcoming negotiations with EK/the UAE, the ministry would well consider the position of Lufthansa. On the other hand, a new agreement between the EU and Jordan was praised as a milestone...

Thus, it's all politics.

So they are going to favor LH...I understand.

But normally EU stands for free/open market/competition etc etc

Can we put this to rest ? It has been confirmed as an April 1 joke on the local German forum.
