WASHINGTON — The overall performance of U.S. airlines worsened in 2006, its third consecutive year of decline, according to the 17th annual Airline Quality Ratings released here Monday.
Its performance fell in three of the four categories measured by the study: on-time arrival, involuntary bumping and mishandled luggage. The customer complaint rate was flat.

Among individual airlines, the study rated Hawaiian Airlines the best performer last year. The study rated 18 airlines for 2006, the first year that Hawaiian was large enough to be included.

He is another opinion from Boyd group why we shouldn't pay any attention to this rating.

Funny its not really an opinion, its based off of stats, kinda like the power rankings in sports, thats what this is.

Well I agree with Boyd that this "survey" written by academics who are so far removed from the realities of airline operations, that its results should I only be taken with a grain of salt. Its annoying that the media jumps on this to be the end all, be all, report card for airline "quality."

On a strictly DOT numbers basis, yes this survey has some merit. But for any survey of this type that breaks out the regionals as seperate airlines, its tough to draw apples-to-apples comparisons when you can make the point that Delta & ASA are one in the same - that DL controls much of what drives ASA's numbers.

This is just like those "Top University Rankings" - just one data point among many, that tries to boil something comples down to a simple numerical ranking when there really isn't just one right answer.
