WN Route Proving?

Tue Apr 03, 2007 9:27 pm

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWA8016

And there's been more like that one in the last week. There was another round trip with a similar flight number 3 or 4 days ago. Is WN running charters for someone (I thought they were usually numbered in the 9000's)? If so, why are the flights at such weird times of the day (maybe the only time they can spare an aircraft?)?

Or is this a sign that WN may be looking at flying into ABE? I looked on their website and couldn't find anything. Anybody have any clue?

They could actually be doing some aircraft mods at ABE thus why the odd time of day.....last fall I remember a crew taking a 300 from HOU to BHM (I think, maybe GSO) around midnight, the same crew came back with another jet 4 hours later and they told me they were doing the eyebrow modifications on these aircraft, so that may be what you are finding on flightaware, maybe not!

I didn't know ABE did those kinds of modifications. I don't know where the facilities would be. I've been to ABE many times and have never seen 737's there, let alone WN ones. This week is the first time since I started school here (in August 2005) that a WN flight comes into ABE. So if they are doing eyebrow mods, which could be the case, they just got the new facilities.

Anybody confirm or deny this?

And I am not saying they do, just offered a thought!

It was a charter... We've run some from MDT and LNS as well...

No mods at ABE.

The flight you're referring to wasn't going HOU-BHM, but HOU-DHN to drop off an aircraft for MX work, and pick-up another one that was finished and take it back to either HOU (usually) or DAL (occasionally).

Seems an odd time for charter. Is it purely because that's the only time they could find an unused aircraft?

Who was the charter for? Private, or a team, or something else?

Thanks.

Would the 8000 number indicate a military charter? I seem to recall a few of those at RDG a while back too.

8000 flight numbers at WN indicate any charter flights...not specifically military charters.

I worked several charters in December/January, all 8000-flight numbers, and they were all College Bowl game-related....alumni groups, marching bands, etc....

The Dallas-Durango ski charters also operate with 8000-flight numbers.

I actually worked that flight today. It was a sports team charter for some baseball team. Well over 200 bags. Not a fun way to start your morning.

737s at ABE were quite common during the Hooters Air days with -200s or -300s seen on an almost daily basis operated by Pace.

At one point we were overnighting the 737-200 and 737-300 and the 757-200 all at ABE.

Do you mean the WN flight into ABE or were you referring to another poster?

Right. I should have clarified. I've never seen WN 737's there. The Hooters Air 732's were gorgeous.

Absolutely. That was one of the better schemes out there. Too bad it's gone.

Hello All

Quoting R311music (Reply 14):
I was referring to that exact flight today. ABE-MCO 8016.

This flight was a ferry back from a charter going up.

It was a high school that chartered the aircraft for their band. Don't know the name of the school and if I did I would not post it.

The aircraft did it thing all day yesterday, flying here and there, and was to RON at MCO.

Dispatch guys assigned it as the charter going up and ferried back. Got in about 3am.

The great thing about this charter was someone from the school was very smart. All their band equipment was trucked down and back so they decided to put there luggage in the truck instead of the plane. This flight was the only time in my 6 years with WN that I had a plane go out full of paxs but with no bags.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
