CHQ.....Paint The Aircraft Already!

Tue Apr 03, 2007 10:09 pm

Okay it has been 4 months since CHQ started flying for CO, good or bad makes no difference, but it is sure not looking like the first class organization as some on this site insist if they can't even paint the aircraft. Am I simply expecting to much or what is the latest excuse for this shabby look?

Seeing as how the CRJs are only flying with CO, I'm not sure why they haven't painted some of them. Maybe they're waiting for the next heavy maint check. Some of the other a/c that are flown under multiple banners (such as the ERJ-145) are left unpainted on purpose so that they can be used for flights on US Airways or United, etc.

Poor operation at best! Guess we/me were very spoiled with CO/ExpressJet marriage that lasted some 15-18 yrs or so, very sad.

I wouldn't really call it a poor operation. There are only a couple a/c that are painted in a generic blue and white livery, and they are often used as spares. So say a United Express flight is going to be cancelled because of maintenance issues, they could bring in one of the generic a/c and still get the pax to their destination.

Some of the CRJs are apparently flying US Airways flights also, which is why there are a couple of blue tail CRJs. The properly painted aircraft look very nice...unfortunately, the unpainted ones seem to dominate the ramp at Houston. Republic Airways Holdings seems to be in a bit of a bind right now so don't hold your breath waiting for those aircraft to get painted...management has bigger fish to fry.

Don't hold your breath too long....N653BR debuted in CLE today with full Express colors! Here is the first shot of it, with some better ones to come this evening after I get off my shift:

CRJs are in DL flying too for FAA observation rides for new captains out of CVG. So until we get this spun up expect the generic CRJs to stay. And the 145s will stay that way. The only one of those that bothers me is the 145 that is in EX UA colors minus titles.

So, it sounds like quite a few of them working for CO are still in "generic" colors in Houston? Is that what you are saying, or do you mean generic for DL in CVG? (Maybe I'm just too tired!)

Anyway, they debuted here in CLE today and looked the part completely. Both aircraft working out of CLE today were indeed in full COEX colors. The Chautauqua ERJ's are easy to distinguish by the lack of titles on the engine nacelles...at least so far!

Here's a link to a series of shots I took today of both aircraft if you're interested:

I've only seen two in full c/s so far. An ERJ-145 and a CRJ-200 about a week ago. The rest I have seen have been in various stages of the painting process.

There are no stages. Aside from the few CRJ's that are generic in color, every other CHQ plane you have seen will be staying as you've seen it.

So no plans to paint any more in CO colors then?

I should have been clearer. Any CHQ ERJ that you have seen operating a CAL flight is in it's final paint condition. We continue to remove aircraft from the US Airways system and repaint them into CAL colors. There were 20 planes in USX colors that are slowly being repainted and brought into the CAL system. If I had to guess, I would say 5-7 have already been repainted. We have a few "floating spare" airplanes that have a white fuselage and blue tail that can be implemented into any of our codeshares when a replacement bird is needed. There is also one airplane (N296SK) that is also now a "floating spare" that was previously in the UAL system that still has full UAX colors with the exception of the United Express titles and the tail logo removed. Hopefully this plane will be painted into generic colors soon as it sticks out like a sore thumb at most of the airports.

Well of course there is only one ExpressJet! I thought I was pretty careful about making sure I made the distinction between ExpressJet and Continental Express...didn't mean to cause any confusion! (Unless you were joking!  Confused )  Smile

Yeah I was joking. I was jabbing at your "at least so far" comment. See you around C ramp!

There's 9 ERJ-145's that have been painted in full CO colors already.

Usually what is done is that the paint is applied (white body, gold line, blue tail) which is being prepared for CO, they had the inspection and checks done early before the CO regional flying started...then they were put in 'spare' status to keep flying line of flight while the others are going into the paintshop.

Once the CO flying started, they had the CO logo applied to the tail and the name too, then they were repositioned and flew the line of flight for CO express.

There's one more ERJ-145 going in the paint shop today and should be done in like a week.
