PenAir To Get Q400's

Wed Apr 04, 2007 8:43 am

Interesting news for Alaskan aviation. Evidently KS (PenAir) will be replacing its Saab 340 fleet with the Q400 over the coming years. Since the order is apparently pretty far off who knows if it will actually come to fruition, but exciting nonetheless! The article is from a Dutch Harbor/Unalaska media outlet.

Nice change, but not in any hurry, I guess. As late as 2016, I wonder how many they plan to phase in per year.
Perhaps PenAir will expand a bit into other Alaska locales. Maybe take over Era's service in the 'Last Frontier'?

Not an unsurprising move,

The Aleutians where overserved when Reeve was still operating, and underserved when KS didn't have the aircraft to cover those routes when they went under in 2000. Add to that Alaska pulling out of DUT, two years ago, something had to happen to improve capacity.

This seems to me like the perfect fit. I have wondered why it took the Q400 so long to make it into Alaska. Before realizing ERA's issues I though it would be a possible replacement a/c.

I had heard this but for some reason i had heard that it was Q-300's, oh well it wasnt a very reliable source. Another thing that i wonder about is the TO performance of the Q-400, i was viewing the TO distance and it looked like, fully loaded, the plane wouldnt be able to get out of Dutch. Also is there any possiblity of a Q-400 Combi???? just a thought, and heres another, start flying to Kodiak!!!!!

The article mentions that the state is doing some improvements to DUT. Although I have to say it's surprising that a 732 could utilize DUT, but apparently the Q400 would have problems. However, I think the 400 will be a good fit for Penair, especially on the DUT runs. Definitely a step up from the Saabs, although it's curious that its taking them 10 years to acquire these planes.

This is very true. The shortest runway Horizon uses is STS at 5,100ft and they have been talking about how short it is. With DUT being 3,900ft, well needless to say this is really pushing the envelope. I imagine that DUT will have some weight restrictions and ANC non-stop without may be out of the question.

I shudder to think how long an ANC-DUT flight would take in a Q300....

Very, very cool.

The Saabs are all used, and not bad aircraft really. They haven't been in the inventory for too many years. Some from NW and some from Business Express.

Why 10 years?

Is there that many aircraft on back-order?

I flew that route once when Markair had the run-in a Q300.

I can't remember how long it took, but when I would send a Merlin/Metro down there on a medevac I think I filed for 2.5-3 hours. Been a couple of years though.
