GOL Receives Approval For The Acquisition Of VRG

Thu Apr 05, 2007 7:44 am

"

GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes (NYSE: GOL and Bovespa: GOLL4) Brazil's low-cost, low-fare airline, yesterday received approval from the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) to complete the transfer of VRG to GTI S.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes. With this authorization, GOL will begin executing the plan developed for VRG, which will operate with its own brand (VARIG) and differentiated services, while incorporating the low-cost business model from GOL Transportes Aereos S.A....

RE: GOL Receives Approval For The Acquisition Of V

I'm not sure I understand the rationale behind keeping a separate brand, but encorporating the same low-cost business model as GOL? How do they plan to differentiate the two other than Longhaul vs Shorthaul? Do they just intend to bring RG's costs down, but try to provide a higher level of service? If not, why bother with the differentiation? Does anyone have more insight on this?
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Yes, that's exactly what they plan to do. You could say that they're going to be a low cost, "high" fare carrier. Both companies will remain separate entities and will concentrate on different niches of the market. Gol's CEO, Constantino Júnior, stated that Varig will not offer first class service anymore, since it doesn't match the company's (Gol's) philosophy. Caviar and champagne won't be seen on Varig flights like it was common in its golden era, which was marked by ostentatious luxury. The goal is to offer quality service. Nonetheless, the concept of "quality" wasn't explained. Varig offers nowadays on SDU-CGH shuttle, for example, a very peculiar service with great variety for a 35-40 minutes flight. If they're going to change it a little bit by taking hot sandwiches, waffles and pancakes off the menu and replacing them with cold sandwiches, cereals and cookies in order to reduce costs, only time will tell.

Oh, I almost forgot! The transaction still needs approval from CADE, the Brazilian antitrust agency.

MIA and JFK are stronger markets for Brazil than LHR, and is that why i believe they decided to go back first to the United States. Also, MIA and JFK with a 767-300ER is not that bad as DL, AA and UA runs the same plane on several routes. But for UK, is not good to compete against BA 744 and JJ A332 services with an out-dated plane.
IMO, chances of a successfully resume are higher in MIA and JFK than any other destination in Europe.

Do you know if they plan anything in the short term for FRA? It's been losing money, and the MD11s have to go soon.

You are totally correct. Everything has been arranged beforehand... This is unfortunately the way things happen with our president!

And can tell you this kind of things TAM does not do!

By the way, interesting an article I read today on Aero Magazine...they are comparing that TAM is the "Geni" of the old song of Chico Buarque...Pls look into it and you will understand better.

Have a nice Easter.

No Sampa, Gol announced that Varig will be a 2-class operator (C + Y)

No, they never conclude the deal with Embraer for E-Jets.

Not yet, but they keep looking for some planes in order to return the 2 M11 they are now using.
