I'm not sure what's going on in the hangars these days. I work on the ramp for AA @ DFW and have seen several aircraft with the similar look to them. Hmmm, makes me think if this is another "cost cutting measure" AA is looking into. "Lets see if we can increase fuel mileage if we ""shave off"" a few inches on the decals."

Just today I saw a MadDog with the AA logo "very" off center on the tail. It was positioned high and forward of the normal position. I did a double take when I first saw it.

For those of us not really familiar with AA logo could you explain where the difference is...would it be the AA font and shape of the eagle ? after all doesn't make much difference to me !

I presume the second photo is the older one in which case, the older one has a more bold effect and is a lot shorter in height, text wise.

The "AA" on the first image is not the proper Helvetica type as AA normally uses. It appears to be a nonstandard type, perhaps Franklin or some other type. The Eagle is also grossly misproportionate. It's as though the paint shop lost their templates for the tail (though the logo is probably a large decal given the nature of AA's livery), and decided to make new ones on their own hoping no one would notice.

Why not then have no markings on the aircraft and just ingrave the logo and name on the sides!! That would "shave" off a couple of gallons needed!!

The eagle makes the tail look lopsided. It looks terrible. Probably another idiotic wAAy to save a couple of bucks.

If you look closely the eagle in between is quite and slightly different. I believe it was just a mix up since it is the only a/c with that tail logo.

The aircraft in the picture that you posted (ship 5EX/N189AN) was retrofitted with winglets almost a year ago, in early summer 2006. It is not newly retrofitted.

Which other aircraft besides 5EX have this altered tail logo?

Quoting Ebs757 (Thread starter):

No. The 757’s fitted with winglets after 5EX do not have this altered logo.

Quoting Ebs757 (Reply 11):

AA cares. They have used their current logo and livery since 1968 and it has been unchanged for 39 years. They have built up an enormous brand identity that is recognised around the world and they realize that this is extremely valuable to their business. A core component of their brand identity is the company trademark consisting of the symbolic eagle in a fixed relationship to the initials “AA”. The altered trademark is not even recognisable as an eagle and does not use the AA corporate font (Helvetica).

It looks terrible

I agree with you both – it does look terrible and I think that it is just a mistake.

Is it possible that the logos appear different because the first plane (N189AN) is not directly lined up with the camera? It appears in the picture of N189AN the camera is behind the plane while in the picture of the second plane (N630AA) the camera is aligned with the center of the plane. Thus, the logo is slightly distorted. Kind of a key stone effect but horizontally.

No, the perspective has nothing to do with it. Even if it were straight on, it'd still be different. There's too much distortion to be caused by a simple change in angle.

In the altered tail logo, the font is narrower, as well as the eagle itself. Also, the Eagle is missing the definition in its wings... and if you look at the example I show here below, the proper eagle actually has an eye. Obviously the 757 in question had its logo applied without the proper stencil, or in the case of stickers, the MX people did a freehand of the eagle on some type of vector-based drawing program. They obviously didn't have "helveticAA", so they selected a similar font. I am sure AA is more than aware of the poorly done copy, and will correct it when the plane goes in for heavy MX.

It may seem trivial to you but AA really does care about things like this a lot more than you might think. They even employ people specifically to deal with such matters!!

AA is very protective of its corporate identity and has strict rules and guidelines for the use of its trademark logo in advertising and other communications.

From AA Digital Assets Management website (www.aadams.com) -:

American Airlines is one of the leading air carriers in the world today. Part of the success of our marketing effort lies in the uniform use of our graphic identity. The visual presentation of American Airlines to our customers, employees and the public must be instantly recognized as coming from a corporation that delivers a superior level of service.

Every application of the American Airlines corporate identity should strengthen the company's image and must be done with care and with the highest quality standards. The company logo in all its forms is the exclusive property of American Airlines, Inc. It is protected by law and must be shown accurately and consistently to maintain strength and ownership.

If this is a mistake, I am sure they will replace it when the aircraft goes in to TUL for its next C check.
