Air Canada A343 To TS?

Sat Apr 07, 2007 7:20 am

Would Air Transat be interested with some AC A343 (2 or 3) for expend there Fleet and use them on Europe route (CDG,LGW,ATH,FCO)

1- there A-310 getting older

2- they have 4 A330, am i mistaken thinking that the cockpit of the A330-A340 family is very similar and Pilot could be Cross Train easily?

3- i know 4 engines is more expensive than 2 they use to maintain L-1011  Smile

TS is concentrate there operation in YUL and YYZ... thus with addition of A343 of AC they would utilize them more for some Vancouver-Calgary Europe and some YYZ-Yul to Ath-FCO...in summer Freeing up some A310 to serve better the YHZ and YYT - YQB to carabeen in winter and being able to offer more winter destination from Vancouver Calgary Edmonton and winnipeg...

Going a little bit Crazy could even Start a YYZ-HNL in peak winter Season

my 2 cents

Just a thought

It's me again....

Three of AC A343s are going to Switzerland, and I believe that TS would acquire such aircraft only if the range available could be used to its full potential. But I would love to see an A343 in TS colors.

And for such flight, the A332s or A333s have the required range.

The A310s may look like old, but they are just between 15 and 19 years old compared to the L1011s, some of which were used well into their late twenties, like C-FTNA or C-FTNB.

In that case, if they need more capacity, they should add more A333s new, or wait till those of AC are freed up. They are RR-powered too.

Quoting YULYMX (Reply 3):

That's partly due to the 21 seats in Club class, and perhaps also a slightly more generous seat pitch for the "chicken house" at the back rather than the 440 seats in an all coach configuration with a 29/30in seat pitch.

If you know how to make it profitable all year round from Canada, why not trying it....  biggrin

They're looking at getting rid of all Airbuses and switching to Boeing. Just a rumour floating around TS

That rumour has been floating around even before TS decided on the A332.

If TS needed A343's they would have been bought already. If TS decides to launch pacific routes, then they could use them.

Hazard a guess, I'd say no.

Quoting YULYMX (Thread starter):
1- their A-310 getting older

They managed to outlive alot of competition with these slightly older, cheaper leased aircraft.

Quoting YULYMX (Thread starter):

Yes, and for mtce it is a 1 week difs course.

Quoting YULYMX (Thread starter):

Correct, as long as they served a purpose, they continued to fly them until it no longer remained feasible/cost effective. They also ran 5 aircraft types for a while, just because they did so in the past, is no reason they should do it again.

Quoting YULYMX (Reply 3):
they just put 362 pax in it

This is from the Tristar days. the -100 and -200 models had commonality 362 pax. When the A332 was introduced, for further commonality (aircraft swap) it was also kept to 362. The sole A333 was kept to 362 for the same reason. It was introduced into the fleet at a time when the pacific rim was in a downturn Dragonair wanted to unload aircraft and the deal was a sweetheart in TS favour. If i heard correctly, at the time A332 cost approx $900K/Month and the sole A333 cost $200K/Month as Dragonair was going to lose money on an aircraft they had no use for, they actually subsidized TS taking the aircraft for the first couple of years. A second A333 was in the works until someone at Dragonair realized they were getting raped. Therefore to take on another A333 is basically flying around with extra metal, same pax as the A332, as the capacity would still be 362.

They are now, and have been for some years now, doing the internal debate which way to go A vs. B. They hemmed and hawed for so long, they have lost out on prime delivery slots for virtually anything that suits their range/payload requirements. The way it is looking to me, they could just as easily end up with MD11/MD80 mix.

The corporate culture at Group Transat (the mothership) is it was started by a bunch of tour operator/travel agents. The primary money maker is the tour operators they own, the airline is secondary. It appears, rather logically, that it makes more sense to be able to sell more tix/packages than seats in your possession. If for a given month you can sell 70000 packages but only have capacity for 65,000 there would be a greater chance of finding someone who can carry the excess load (Canjet, Westjet ....etc.) than to have to get an extra aircraft that will sit idle for a few months per year.

I was referring to the coach class where pax are cramped, and in that case the one of TS.

Does any body use the A340 in charter or in high capacity configuration?

TS can squeeze 360+ pax in their A333s and still operate their longer routes economically. Could the same be done in a A 340?
