UA's Past Service To Jackson, Mississippi (JAN)

Mon Apr 09, 2007 3:44 am

I was looking through some old timetables and saw that UA (United Express) used to serve JAN in the late 1990's. When did they discontinue it and why?

It's odd not seeing UA in this market anymore considering that the other majors such as AA, DL, CO, NW, and US serve it.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Discontinued becuase of poor loads just like everything else. JAN is a tough market to crack due to its large DL frequent flyer base. Also, it's sort of a mid tier market, which doesn't see a lot of leisure or business demand (business demand being centered around local markets, ie, MEM, ATL, DFW, etc).

DL used to route 757's though JAN as late as 2000 or so....used to do ATL-JAN-DFW and back.

They also used to fly DEN-MEM-JAN in the '80s.

JAN is one of those "total Delta markets" you hear about. There's only scraps for the remaining players. You're talking Delta country. After Katrina, maybe JAN got a boost in demand, but only a little.

I know mainline UA served JAN at one point. I think service started around 1984 or '85 when UA use to boast service to all fifty states. I flew UA onetime, either in 1988 or '89, routed PWM-ORD-JAN-MEM-ORD-PWM. I remember the legs to/from JAN were on a 727-200. I'm not sure when mainline service discontinued, but don't remember a UA presence remaining at JAN after 1994.

Yes, DL is the main player, but SW carries a significant amount out of JAN as well.

While this may have been true in the past, today the JAN market is actually quite fragmented. DL's marketshare is only 28%. WN has a marketshare of about 33%. The rest of the traffic is split between AA, CO, US and NW.

UA's inability to penetrate JAN is just reflective of UA's overall weakness in the South. UA hasn't had much luck in most secondary southern markets. This is due in part to UA having no real southern hub. DL, US and NW have hubs in the South. AA and CO have DFW and IAH which have good southern connections. The closest thing UA has is IAD, but IAD isn't that big of a hub. Over time, I believe that UA's IAD hub has potential and could be UA's best chance of reaching into the South.
