POS To PBM. SLM Still Flying It?

Mon Apr 09, 2007 9:15 am

Does anyone but Suriname Airways fly from Port of Spain to Paramaribo? Does Suriname still fly this route? Their web site is uninformative, and it lists a disconnected 800 number.

My goal is to go to St. Laurent du Maroni, which is halfway between CAY and PBM, and reachable by bus from either. The Air France island jumper is awfully expensive and slow ($1,000+ from MIA). CO can get me to POS for less than $400. I could almost swim the rest of the way no? Or are there boats?

Thank you Caribbean friends for any current information.
I've flown thousands of miles and I can tell you it's a lot safer than crossing the street!

PY still flies PBM-POS-AUA-CUR-PBM. I assume they also fly POS-PBM at some point during the week but I don't know which days. They still fly the MD82 on these regional routes while their 747 flies the PBM-AMS-PBM route.

It hurts me as a Surinamese person to say, but I would avoid PY. They are terribly unreliable, just like their website. They have only one MD82 (and a 743), but both break down frequently, leaving pax stranded for hours. Service onboard is good though... the only thing they have going for them. Isn't Caribbean Airlines an option? Even though they have impossible times and are also not very reliable, often having delays for hours and terrible ground staff. IMHO you will be better off going to CAY directly, if you need to go to St. Laurent. I don't know about French Guyane, but it is not that easy going from PBM to St. Laurent. (If it's adventure your seeking though, go for it  Wink )

Is Air Caraibes also not an option?

Kappel,

Of course it's adventure I'm seeking - otherwise, I'd go to Martinique  Silly

When I investigated last year, it was cheaper AND FASTER to fly to CAY through PARIS (and I live near Baltimore USA). So I went to Guatemala instead!

So let me look at your suggestion: I could get to SDQ for about $300 on Continental. So far so good.

Now Air Caraibes, let's see. WOW!, the cheapest SDQ-CAY round trip is $1,264 and it takes 8 HOURS!

This is so crazy! Some people have 1000 things to see before they die on their list. I have about 6, but one is St. Laurent du Maroni, and it's just impossible to get there  Embarrassment

Those prices don't surprise me one bit. I once wanted to book a flight from SXM to PTP for a weekend and I also ended up with a price of about 1000 euros when using the Air Caraibes website. They are very expensive and it takes very long before you reach your final destination. So I wouldn't recommend Air Caraibes if their website prices are correct because it will be very expensive.

This is even more incredible, for such a short trip. Well, let me say this, if you will use PY, make sure to reserve some time for Surinam. I may be biased, but it's a beautiful country with lots to see.

May I ask why you want to go to St Laurent? If you are going through Surinam, one possibility is with a rental car, but it's also possible to take the bus from Paramaribo to St. Laurent. That's about a 3 hour drive.

Caribbean Airlines does fly to PBM but I am not sure how many times per week. Does AF fly from MIA-CAY? If they do then that may be your best choice, albeit an expensive one.

Alas, there are no ferries to French Guiana from Trinidad or indeed any of the Islands. AF Regional did fly from CAY to POS at one point earlier this decade but this service seems to have ended around 2005.

Hop to it, fly for life!

Yes, I know about the AF flight, but it is expensive ($1,200 +), slow (three or four stops between MIA and CAY), and I don't live in Miami. The flight leaves MIA so early, I would have to spend the night. In other words, I could get to anywhere in China just as slowly and as expensively...

You are right, Kappel, I am actually more interested in coming to St. Laurent / Albina from the West. I believe that Paramaribo would be more interesting than Cayenne / Kourou.

Why St. Laurent? ---> in order to go up the Maroni in a pirogue, up to Maripasoula.

I've been planning that trip for years, but in the end, it's always so expensive and so time consuming that I end up going elsewhere. For instance I have another future river dream: a crazy old steamship in Bangladesh called The Rocket. 36 hours from Dhaka to Khulna. Well, believe it or not, it's easier, cheaper and faster to get to Dhaka, and on a 5-star airline too, Qatar Airways, than to CAY or to PBM.

Anyway, I always get antsy at this time of year. Where could I try the mosquitos next?

LOL, I believe it. Beleive it or not, AMS-PBM-AMS is one of the highest yielding routes for KLM. Somehow it's just very expensive to fly to the Guyana's.

Interesting, you are an adventurer indeed. Then you will love Surinam  Wink

Yes they do, on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. I think Caribbean Airlines flies on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. The flight takes just over an hour. Good luck!
To fly, or not to fly: that is the question

How about MIA-BEL with JJ and BEL-CAY with Air Caraïbes??
I don't work for COPA Airlines!
