United Drops Osaka-Honolulu From 01OCT07

Mon Apr 09, 2007 3:12 pm

http://www.jwing.com/w-daily/bn2007/0409.htm

UNITED will drop daily Osaka - Honolulu service effective 01OCT07. The decision was made on 06APR07.

The decision leaves JALWays and nwa as the only two carriers flying this route. UA will re-route its pax through Star Alliance partner ANA via Tokyo.

UNITED took over ANA's KIX-HNL few years ago.

excellent...so a couple of B 777-200ERs freed up it seems for UAL to launch another long haul route or add frequencies to another route which sees high seasonal surge in demand during the winter season.

UA took over the route because the plane was standing 20 hour anyway in Osaka. So it makes perfect sense to extend the flight to somewhere.

I hope UA will route the flight to somewhere else in East Asia.

Or perhaps they will just turn the aircraft around immediately after it arrives in KIX.
This was the schedule until 2001/2 when it was a 744.
Though, the return flight would miss the main Asian bank of flights.

Does this actually free up aircraft time or was it just utilization flying?

HNL-KIX dropping
NGO-TPE dropped
That is 2 planes, I think,

Isn't ORD-KIX getting dropped as well?

SFO-NGO is 2 planes with one on the ground for 23 hours at NGO.
My name is Centrair but HND is closer. Let's Japanese Aviation!

The only way the discontinuation of the KIX-HNL route would free up a single 777 would be to turn around the 777 on the SFO-KIX immediately upon arrival at KIX.
If UA exercises its 5th freedom to fly elsewhere in Asia, it would still require two 777s to operate SFO-KIX-???-KIX-SFO.
I wonder if NH would restore its own KIX-HNL service then?

Quoting Centrair (Reply 7):
NGO-TPE dropped

That has been on the books for a while as soon as the nonstop SFO-TPE commences on June 3rd.

Was it the SFO-KIX aircraft that operated the KIX-HNL sector?

12:33p SFO I 4:20p+1 KIX UA 885 Non-stop 777 11:47
7:00p KIX 7:35a HNL M UA 832 Non-stop 777 7:35

3:25p KIX 9:02a SFO I UA 886 Non-stop 777
9:37a HNL M 1:35p+1 KIX UA 833 Non-stop 777 8:58

If so, I wonder why UA wouldn't consider operating the sector on a counter-rotating basis to reduce ground time, and improve utilisation by returning the aircraft back to SFO earlier?

SFO-HNL-KIX-SFO & SFO-KIX-HNL-SFO daily?

I'm sure this would have provided better scheduling flexibility as well...

This would have also allowed UA to offer double daily SFO-KIX... one non-stop, and one via HNL, with perhaps only 2.5 hours longer flight time!

UA still operates HNL-NRT

Correct.

SFO-KIX-HNL

HNL-KIX-SFO is the current rotation until Oct 1st. Then we'll find out how it rotates.

SFO-NGO once the TPE-NGO sector gets cancelled will get shifted so the plane doesn't have to sit on the ground for 20+ hours. After June 3rd when SFO-TPE becomes direct

Not true, currently no airplane spends more than 3 hours skd on ground at NGO. Future skd (after TPE drop) it will be even shorter 1530L arrival / 1705L departure.

...and it's almost always stuffed to the gills. Good to see UA taking advantage of its *A partnership. They need all the long haul widebodies they can get!
