New Life For Retired United 767-200?

Mon Apr 09, 2007 8:53 pm

While visiting Victorville, CA in February I noticed a United 767-200 undergoing maintenance. These 762s have been stored at least since 2003/2004 at VCV, so I am wondering why they stripped the paint off this 767 (see pic below). New life ahead for this 767?

I am also wondering if anyone has any information about the identity (reg, c/n or fleet no.). Unfortunately there are no visible markings left.

It may be re-entering life for another carrier that uses second hand equipment. I doubt UAL would return it to service. There is also the posibility that it is being prepared for conversion to a freighter.

How much does something like this sell for on the 2nd hand market? I clicked the link but it says call for price. How much life does this kind of airframe still have in it?

N610UA is now at Guangzhou , China for checks and paints. It will be going to a new start up in Thailand.

However she is not the one EDDL saw. N610UA is still in complete UA colors minus the titles and logos.

I heard about "UK International Airlines" ... they want to start UK-Pakistan/Dubai flights with 762 equipment. Where are those 767s coming from?

For UK international airlines, they have taken N603UA and N604UA.

Thank you so far! According to Airlinerlist N617UA and N618UA were seen like this at VCV a week before I took the shot. Both are going to join "Gabon AL" .....

checkmark  The reason they were retired was due to an FAA requirement for upgrading certain avionics equipment, and due to their age, the cost/benefit analysis showed it was better to retire/sell these aircraft than spend the additional money to upgrade older aircraft.

There is a lot of talk that ABX Air is going to purchase some of the ex-United 762's as well, and also some more of American's 762's. They just purchased one 762, but they need additional aircraft for the new ANA contract.
Good goes around!

You could probably get a good deal on those ex-DL L1011s as well.  Wink

There was a thread on it recently. It was discussed in quite a bit of detail - basically if I remember correctly through a series of unexpected twists and turns that particular aircraft ended up being returned to the leasor. I'm too lazy to look up the thread, but there is one out there.

Here's one that never left Victorville that is almost ready for flight. Not much of a market for the L10's anymore.

First class still looks pretty good in it's classic configuration.

I have a poster of N603UA on my wall. It is from when the 762 was a jewwl in the fleet - in Orange/Red/Blue stripes.

Most interesting is tail number N601UA (S/N 21862) in VIP configuration. Did UA use it for an all-premium service, charters or as its corporate jet? I wonder if it was also configured with 88 seats as the 762 Executive on the same list.

Isn't this the 762 that was bought by 'Google' founders and was kept a big secret? Maybe they backed-out of the deal?
