Small Seats On VS A346 Upper Class

Tue Apr 10, 2007 2:15 am

I was looking through some pictures and I came across one of me sitting in a VS Upper Class seat on one of its A346 aircraft. The plane visited MSY a few months ago so I took a tour. I sort of forgot how small and frankly uncomfortable those UC seats were! I mean don't get me wrong, i'm a not a small person by any means, but I felt squished in that seat to say the least...elbow room was awful as well. I've never been a big fan of the "seats facing the aisle" layout, but I guess I could cope with it if the seat was at least comfortable. Honestly, the VS Economy and Premium Economy seats were more comfortable than the Upper Class seat. Obviosuly you pay through the nose for the enhanced service when you go F class, but you should at least expect some room to get comfortable. Even though the cabin was very modern and beautiful overall, the VS A346 version of First Class was sadly lacking in the comfort department, and there's no way I would pay thousands of dollars extra to get a marginally (at best) bigger seat.

The seats in Upper Class (to me) are not small. They are infact the widest in buisness class (maybe the new SQ seats are). The beds are huge and comparable to first. I traveled a lot on VS upper class, and I didnt find the seats uncomfortable.

I have flown on dozens of trips in the new upper class seats. Not once have I found them uncomfortable (and I am not small either)

In terms of comparisms with the UCS on a B744, the only real difference is the angle relative to the aisle. I forget the exact figures but the A346 angles more into the aisle by about 15 degrees when compared to a B744.

The UCS may have some limitations but it is still one of the best business class seats out there. Compare it to business class products on AA, UA, EK, CX, AF, KL etc. and it is an extremely competitive product.

With respect, comparing seats for a few minutes whilst on the ground is not the same as spending 10 hours on a packed night flight. The UCS really comes into its own when used as a flat bed for sleeping and there are few business class (let alone economy or premium economy) products that can compete under these conditions.

I am sure you know this already, but for those whoe don't: The VS upper class suite is a business class product. Despite the fact that it actually competes very effectively against some other carriers first class it does not offer the same levels of space as a first class suite on the likes of SQ or JL.

So long 701, it was nice knowing you.

Can't say I've ever had a problem travelling in the Upper Class Suite. I can even sleep on my front with my elbows out to each side as there is so much room when the bed is down.

In seat mode, it is also very comfortable, and has a decent amount of recline - also worth noting it is one of the only seats that is authorised to be reclined for take off and landing due to each seat having direct aisle access.

Upper Class is Business Class and also comparable to some airlines F (VS technically don't have F) although due to the higher config in the cabin, the service is not as attentive as one would expect in F, but VS offers limo transfers in C that even BA don't offer for F. You also get the onboard masseuse on VS out of LHR.

Premium Economy is well....Premium Economy although it has a much better service and different meals and is almost like Business class from 5-10 years ago.

Msytristar,

Unless you are a humongous 300+ person then you shouldn't be so adamant about the lack of comfort of the seat.
I travel Virgin UC on average once per month and at 5'9" 175lbs (from working out for the last 15 years) the seat is extremely comfortable. Absolutely not a problem sitting in it or sleeping.

I find it to be the best business class seat on the market (ok i have not tried BA's new seat as yet) but until i do... i will stand by my claim

No i'm 6'0 240 but I really was dissapointed by the overall lack of space in the front of the 346. It was surprisgingly limited.
