Celebrity Pilots

Tue Apr 10, 2007 8:11 am

The title pretty much sums it up- which celebrities are also qualified pilots? I'm sure everyone knows of some. For instance, John Travolta & John Denver are pretty well known as also being pilots. Less well known are Morgan Freeman, Sidney Pollack (who flies a Citation X as FO), & Bruce Dickinson who is paid as FO by a UK charter airline, Astraeus.

Several golfers including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and most recently Phil Mickelson are pilots who have flown their own business jets.

Two New York Yankee baseball players have been killed piloting their own planes -- Cory Lidle last year and Thurman Munson.

Actor Harrison Ford is also an avid ameteur pilot.

I didn't know that about Rodennberry, but I was going to use that topic in another thread- celebrities that have survived serious or fatal crashes. For instance, F1 driver David Coulthard survived this crash in 2000 along with his wife & his manager. The flight crew was killed.

Jimmy Stewart, WWII bomber pilot.
Clark Gable also flew in WWII, but not sure if he actually piloted.

There's a metal rock star who flies his own plane, and I can't recall who it is.

Edit: I answered my own question, but MissedApproach already mentioned him in the original post. Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden is the airline pilot I was trying to think of. I didn't recognize the name at first.

One day in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I was holding short of the runway, preparing to call tower for departure, when I heard Jack call Ann Arbor tower. He was inbound from Willow Run, and requested a low pass.

Naturally, I opted to sit there for a minute before keying the mic.

A few moments later, Jack tore past me in his P-51....about 50 feet above and 50 feet to the side of me.

He wasn't going slow.  Wink

Crown Prince Willem Alexander of the Netherlands is type rated on the Fokker 70 (and I think the P-3C), he flies commercially for KLM when needed to stay current.

Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands (deceased) was a pilot, trained by the RAF during WW2. Flew Austers and DC-3s among others.

What about Prince Andrew, Duke Of York. He flew a Sea King in the Falklands. He's also flown the Lynx and I'm sure other rotary and fixed wing aircraft. I'm sure he still flies these days. A waste of all that training and tax payers money if he doesn't.

Does anyone know the exact ratings and licenses that John Travolta has. Regular TV doesn't go into detail when talking about it other then ''he owns and flies his own plane!".

I would imagine a full ATP with type rating on the 707. I've heard though that he can't be PIC. Is it possible to have a PPL with Multi-crew, multi-engine, IR and 707 type rating??

According to (highly reliable...) Wikipedia:

The military training of the Prince of Wales took place in the early 1970s. It included helicopter flying and qualification as a fighter pilot. During the Prince's years in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, he came to fly the following aircraft (the WWII vintage Spitfire arguably having more of a historical/symbolic value than practical importance):

* Chipmunk basic pilot trainer
* Harrier T Mk.4 V/STOL fighter
* BAC Jet Provost jet pilot trainer
* Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft
* F-4 Phantom II fighter jet
* Avro Vulcan jet bomber
* Spitfire classic WWII fighter

Whoever this guy is; A DC-9 and a 747-400 are a lot different. I would think going from a DC-9 to a 747 would be a big jump, without anything in between, like a A320 or a B757. Or is this rather common.

Indeed you are correct - about one thing. Dexter Holland, lead singer for Offspring, is indeed type-rated for 747-400 and DC9. However, he's not employed by NW, but acquired his ratings through a special arrangement from NW.

An accomplished pilot, he completed a solo around-the-world trip in 10 days. Also of note, the guy was a doctoral candidate for molecular biology and declined enrolled at USC to focus on his band - amazing!

Michael Dorn, the guy who played Worf from Star Trek is also an avid pilot, I think he flies learjets and stuff like that.

Not sure if he still own's it but at one time Micheal Dorn owned a classic Saberliner Biz Jet !

Cheers

Of course, we can't forget the legendary Niki Lauda.

I could be wrong but I think Ayrton Senna was qualified on the HS125. He certainly used to fly helicopters between his country and city homes in Brazil

Come to think of it, I remember reading in Gerald Donaldson's biography about Gilles Villeneuve that he flew a helicopter to many of the F1 races in Europe.
Can you hear me now?
