AC Special 70th Anniversary Fin

Tue Apr 10, 2007 8:27 am

Hey guys AC has painted one of their A321s with a special 70 Anniversary fin, do not have any pictures right now but it does look interesting, to bad it is not the entire airframe and just the fin. O well the 60th Anniversary one still looks better, apparently a 767 is going to get some paint to hopefully it will be the whole airframe, wait and see I guess.

The 70th anniversary logo actually looks dull. Unless they want it clean and simple and classic

Totally boring. The 60th anniversary retro-livery still rules.

AC//77W Being Fast-tracked Into Revenue Service

Tue Apr 10, 2007 10:44 am

Not at liberty to post it yet, as it's on an internal employee website. Simply a tail decal with stylized "70" & TCA 1937-2007 titles, designed presumably by the marketing/graphics department.

It's FIN 453 - A321 aircraft. The aircraft is out and about flying.

Operating AC754/09 April SFO/YYZ & turning to

AC1224-AC1225/10 April YYZ/MCO/YYZ.

I was going to ask about if AC was going to paint a 70th anniversary a/c. Good to see it's an A321.

My friend and I were flying out of LAX on the 2nd, and C-FFWN (the 65th anniversary a/c) was parked at T2, and she asked me, if it's 5 years after 2002, shouldn't they update it to 70 years?

I didn't quite know how to answer... Big grin

Or just paint over it. It's been allowed to fly way beyond the normal 'paint cycle'.

I've seen a photo of it. After producing such spectacular 60th and 65th anniversary liveries, the 70th decal is about as exciting as AC changing from Eurowhite to toothpaste for the official livery. BORING!!!

The answer is that it cost "LOTS" of money to repaint a plane, specially pulling it out of service when there is nothing wrong. So the plane will useally fly 5-6 years under that livery. The plane is a dedication to employee's, and would only be fair to allow AC to show it off for more then a year.

Alaska's 75th livery will fly for 5-6 years

I think the big consideration aside from cost, is that given the amount of aircraft out of service for XM makeovers, they couldn't afford to yank an A321 from the line for a one-of specialty paint job. The tail decal/logo probably took no more than a couple of hours to apply during the aircrafts down time.

Just my 2 cents.

Yea from what I hear there may be a 70th anniversary 767 paint job coming out, do not know when that will happen however.

I saw it this morning lined up for takeoff about 8am. Looks sharp actually wth just the tail logo changed.

Better than the retro 319 which is not readily apparent as an AC aircraft unless you're used to it.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

According to "YYZNews", "AC Fleet Update--06April 2007" this aircraft will be repaint for the 75th.

It would have been nice to see AC's experimental bare metal 767 repainted with the CP Air "big orange" livery, and another with the AC red and white livery.

Yupp. Here's some trivia for you. CP Air actually ordered 4 762's in 1980 soon after the initial AC and Pacific Western 762 orders. I recall "artist impression" drawings of the CP 762 in the orange scheme. As it turned out, the order was cancelled during the 81/82 recession and converted in part to a 732/733 order.

That would be one hot idea! Seeing that the heritage schemes of US Airways seem to be popular and elicit good memories of more senior employees, I wouldn't be surprised to see more of this occur.

Except I don't think it makes the slightest difference to a passenger's choice of airline. It generates a little free media coverage but not much else. And having too many aircraft in special liveries can dilute your identity, especially when carriers like AC still have much of their fleet in their previous livery.

In AC's case, considering all the problems they had after the merger with CP, integrating seniority lists etc., I think they would be smart to put that all behind them and not dredge up too many reminders of the past.

I think AC could do quite well with say 4 retro jets (70s Red AC, Pacific Western, CPAir (or even the Canadian Pacific cursive letters scheme) and Wardair)... i don't think they need to do the smaller airlines as cool as it would be. Lots of A319s need paint and it would be a nice media event, and there is always the "hey i remember that plane" effect, might make people remember the GOOD old days and forget about the 90s/merger/etc...

plus if they do all the regional airlines, i demand that Jazz paint a couple planes up in Austin Airways and the Green/Blue Air Ontario colors!
