Ramper Killed At DTW Last Night

Tue Apr 10, 2007 7:58 pm

Last night a 19 year-old ASIG employee was run over by a tug outside the MacNamera terminal around 11:30pm. Apparently the tug was unattached from an aircraft, backing out of the gate and pinned him against a belt loader. Not much other in the way of details now.

Thoughts go out to this guy's family & friends.

Be careful out there.

The Detroit News has a couple of paragraphs on it.
Channel 7 has nothing yet.......hey Karl!

As a former ramper years ago, that is unhappy news..

As a former ramper for US Airways in STL, my heart goes out to this young man and his family. It's always important to never become complacent with your responsibilities, and to always make an effort to be observant of any potential dangers. Being a ramper does require a lot of blood & sweat (literally...) and it's unfortunate that this gentleman had to lose his life.

So the apparent story that I got is that last night, the customs/INS computer system was down over at the Berry terminal where the flight would normally arrive, they decided to bring in Spirit's CUN-DTW flight into the MacNamera/Worldgateway to use the customs facilities there. They were going to bring the aircraft into gate A60 and in the process of moving over Spirit's ground equipment, this incident occured. Possibly due to be unfamilar with the gate layout and other/NW's ground equipment in the vicinity.

Disregard my previous post, that was some bad information I received about an unrelated event. The computer system was out at the Berry terminal, so they had to process the passengers by hand. Also, the plane arrived at the Berry terminal where it normally does, but the media assumed that this was abnormal since all other Spirit flights arrive at the Smith terminal, however this is the norm. But they tried to make an event out of this, in relation to the accident on the ramp over at the MacNamera terminal.

Anyways, the guy was 18, just shy of 19 years old, employed by ASIG.
They had just pushed the A330-300 for LH 487 DTW-FRA off of gate A60 when the incident occured around 10-10:30pm last night when the tug was backing in to the gate area.

Note, that NW does not perform ground handling for the BA, LH, AF, or RJ flights that utilize the Worldgateway.

A reminder of just how hazardous the work area can be, and it serves as a warning that we should all pay attention while on the ramp. My heartfelt sorrow goes out to his family, friends and co-workers. It is truly a horrible accident, and may God rest his soul.

My condolences to his family.

Being a Ramp Agent myself it reminds us how careful we have to be and not to take the ramp for granted no matter how familiar you are with the ops.

That's horrible...my heart goes out to his family. I was at DTW last night around that time...we were delayed taking off. I wonder if this had anything to do with it.

Hey man, not trying to thread jack, but do you go to Penn State? I noticed your "screen name" and put the puzzle together... I tried to get a job at KUNV (or SCE if you will) but they wouldn't take me because I couldn't stay over the summer... too bad too, I worked at BWI for quite some time as an airline refueller and MDT as a ramper.

I feel bad for the kid though. The ramp is a dangerous place and one always needs to keep a sharp eye out...

Wow... That's pretty much my age too. I'm turning 19 in less than a month. I've just started working ramp for AA at ONT and I know it can be dangerous if one is not careful, and this certainly is a good reminder for me.

As a former ramper, I knew all to well the dangers of the job. These events are never easy to hear about. It's a tragic reminder of how dangerous the ramp truly is. May God be with his family . Rest in Peace to the ramper.

I'll echo the statements above; as a former ramp agent I know how dangerous it can be on the ramp. My thoughts and prayers go out to this young man's family, friends, and co-workers.

Sometimes rampers don't get the respect they deserve, and we are more than just guys that throw bags around. Kudos to all the hard working rampers out there, stay safe.

Thank God he died of a massive head trauma. That's better than being pinned by your midsection and fully conscious, alert, and oriented. Then, when pressure is released, the person dies within a few seconds.

Uh, ok.

I remember hearing of one guy who died on the ramp after I left ACA at O'Hare. It was one of the guys from our ramp who went to Eagle. It's rare to hear of such, but, usually, from my experience, the stories of people getting killed usually have to do with someone not taking their time and being patient and watchful when using ground equipment. Just my  twocents .

Prayers to the family.

Yet another reminder about the hazards of working on the ramp. I really does rank up there with construction sites with regard to the potential dangers.

A tragic event for any family - especially with such a young man involved.

Wow, I am just shocked reading this. Not one thought for the person or his family. There is no thanking anyone for any reason an 18 year old person dies no matter how quick and painless it might seem. The result in the end is still the same, death. I know you were saying that the death could have been worse but it just seem completely innappropriate here.
