Malaysian Airports Immigration?

Thu Apr 12, 2007 1:13 am

This question might seem a bit random, but how is passport control arranged at key Malaysian airports like Kuala Lumpur? Is there one queue for 'Malaysian passports' and then an 'Others' queue? Or is there a different arrangement?
I heard there is a special queue for UK passport holders?

From memory, there are 3 types of lanes. One for Malaysians, one for foreigners and one for Premium passengers (such pax are given a ticket at checkin which they have to present at the counter otherwise they will not be served).

Malaysians have the E-passport one, they just place passport on scanner and are cleared quickly

Our passport may look no different from other countries but it contains an embedded chip on the back cover. Malaysian citizens entering or leaving the country will not have their passport stamped, they only need to scan it through the reader to open the security barrier.

but if you don't have the a malaysian passport, customs at KLIA can be a nightmare. I've had to wait an hour+ on multiple occasions. Though I must say I was quite impressed (read: jealous) of the nifty e-passports, what other countries have them?

I was just in KL last month. As a US citizen I have no special Passport. Upon arrival, there were two sections--one for Malaysian citizens and one for all others. I arrived about 8:00 PM or a Saturday night. The line was short, the officials friendly, and I was thru in about 2 minutes. When I left Malaysia on a Tuesday evening at about 7:00 PM, there was a cultural program with dancing and singing in the departure lounge. I went thru passport control in less than 1 minute. All in all, Malaysia is a very friendly country and the KL is beautiful and efficient.

What is so special about UK passport holders that they have a line all to themselves?

If that were to happen it definitely wont go too well with this year's patriotic mood as Malaysia celebrates 50 years of independence from UK  Smile. Even in Australia, NZ or Canada where the Queen is their Head of State, I don't recall a special immigration line just for the Brits?

I agree, why would there be a special line for UK passport holders? Malaysia has not been a "colony" since it was Malaya, and that was a while ago. (50 years). You are right about NZ, Aussie and Canada, there are no special lines for UK passport holders, and nor should there be. Because we too , like Malaysia are independent nations, even if the Queen is still our nominal head of state.

I hope to be in KL in June, my first trip back to Malaysia in 12 years.

Immigration was a breeze even I am a US passport holder. It even goes faster at places like Bangkok or Tokyo cause I am certified Pre-Boarder and lets see a MAAS (Meet And ASsist) I just request that agent meet me at jetway, they take my passport and I skip the lines.  Smile

There are 2 type of passport lanes in key malaysian airports (KUL, BKI, KCH):
1) Malaysian Passport lanes

2) Foreign Passport holder lanes
divided into several lanes
- individual lanes
- family/group lanes (KUL)
- premier lanes (KUL)
- air crew/flight crew lanes
- APEC/Diplomatic lanes (KUL)
- Special lanes - for foreign workers n etc. (KUL)

As for foreigners entering state of Sarawak, they need to fill in the immigration/customs form and go through immigration counters in KCH, MYY, SBW or etc for the second time.
