Interesting Insight On Airline Frequent Flyer Prog

From a reporter who recently attended a conference on airline frequent flyer programs. It has some interesting insight on the economics of such programs.

Well, it's an interesting article.

However, I'd take exception to his assertion (at the bottom of the first page) that ground earners (who want free tickets) are happy and sky earners (who want upgrades) aren't. He says upgrades are available in great quantities, and he cites Continental Airlines (where I'm Silver Elite) as an example of a generous upgrade program. That's notoriously not true at CO, even though there's no limit to the number of upgrades an elite member can receive.

Anyway...

I centainly agree that holding a ton of cards from a load of different airlines is really stupid. I know a guy at work who has 13 FFP accounts with a few miles in each! I have tried to tell him it's silly but he doesn't get it.
