NW Brings The 757 And A330 To ONT!

Fri Apr 13, 2007 9:46 am

I was working my normal morning shift on the ramp at ONT this morning, and while chilling out waiting for our flight to come in, I see an NW 757 land on 26R! I was surprised... I thought maybe NW was coming back with scheduled service to ONT, but I realized it was probably a diversion.

Here's a shot-

N554NW

Then, a few hours later, after we've pushed back the late-morning AA flight, I and a co-worker are checking the propane tanks in the tugs and I see another NW aircraft drift by above 26R- and this time it was an A330!!! I was astounded. I couldn't get a shot of it landing because it caught me totally off guard... But I did manage to get a supremely crappy shot of it parked on the south side of the airfield-

Think I should upload it? Big grin

Either way, when I got home, I couldn't locate any FlightAware entry for the flights... Anyone know the story on this? Made my day a bit more interesting for sure...

Thanks for the info. I'm surprised they didn't fly to RIV or something...

Was it a diversion?

BTW, I don't know about what the wind was like where you were, but we were in a blizzard minus snow up at ONT today!!! It was hard to stand while I was wingwalking today and hard to keep the wands in an X... I hope I didn't confuse any pilots. Big grin

Knocked out power to 120k people in LA and caused many car accidents. Or caused many morons to get into accidents. Lots of trees and branches down, garbage and garbage cans blow everywhere...

I got my power back at 7:15PM, about 5 hours after it went out. Not too bad, really. All daylight hours.

I see. That sucks... About all the accidents, well, you know how we Southern Californians drive the moment anything other than pristine weather occurs...

Both flight were originally planned for VCV, however due the winds it was decided to move the operations over to ONT and bus the troops.

Yes. NWA327 tried to land on 24R twice before diverting to LGB. Dont know if it was a lack of nerve or two instances of last second bad gust however on both occasions the aircraft proceeding and following NWA327 landed OK.

Btw- See Korean Air 15 a B744 at ONT also yesterday? Diverted around 3:30pm, before returning to LAX at about 6pm.
AA also had a 767 - AA19 pop in from JFK for about 2.5hours at ONT, however many pax wishing to get off were allowed to deplane.

Steady winds of about 20kts, with gust up to 37kts from what the tower called. Problem really was in the fact that winds would often be 70-100 degree crosswinds with many airplanes only authorised for up to 30kt cross winds.

what prompted Korean and AA to divert?

i flew into SFO from MSP last night on NWA - instead of the modesto 3 arrival (I think that's the one, per my UA Ch 9 listening), we were sent north, out over point reyes and then down across SF and looped in for 28R landing. anyone know why the usual approach for 28R wasn't used (and I know that the Europe and Asia flights often use this approach so it isn''t unusual, just unusual to me)

Where was that NW A320 coming in from? I was at the airport, and all of a sudden out of the blue a friggin NW plane pops down on the runway! Well hello, i talked to the pilot and he said : "We tried to make it into LAX, but they didnt like u, so we came over to friendly LGB." Then with a smirk started laughing, hahah gottta love it!

The Feeling of seeing some of those diverted aircraft were amazing. Like it was said above all happened just to fast for a good snap shot, but here is what I managed to pull in my rush to my evening accounting class. Just a quick question I heard the engines running on both aircraft within an hour of arrival do you think they had enough fuel to keep letting those babys run?

I don't know why they do it but I have done the MSP-SFO before and once we were an hour early so we did that approach, pilot got clearance to fly by the Golden Gate (thought the plane was going to tilt to the left since every pax got up to go look out the left window) but then we went down to Montery/Carmel and did a couple of loops down there until heading back up to SFO.

Yea it was pretty bad. It was WORSE yesterday though, without a doubt. I'm here in San Bernardino and on my way back from school, we hit some MAJOR traffic on the 30 going to the 215 South. Turns out some girl flipped her car a couple of times and finally landed on its side.

Surprisingly enough, by the time we passed the site of the accident, the girl was outside waiting for the ambulance.

Lucky girl, she is....

Yeah, ONT got a Korean Air 744 and an AA 762 and I missed it!!!

My supervisor said it was a great thrill pushing back the 762 though, compared to the MD-80s we normally handle...

That is really an awesome sight at ONT. Hopefully, ONT gets more diversions, cause going to LAX 80 miles one way to spot is not at the top of my list. We need for inclement weather.
