Back in the 90's Air Jamaica used to be an airline people travelling to Jamaica tried to avoid (at least to my knowledge). I heard stories of really nasty flight attendants and all around poor management. NOTHING left on time. Then a new manager took over and he completely clean the airline up. The flight attendants got nice, the service was great, and flights left and arrived on time. I remember flying TWA from JFK to MIA and flying on an Air Jamaica night flight ( think A 320 but I was too young to remember) The food was great (better than the American carriers at that time), and I remember that was the first time I even seen the screen with the map of the with the altitude, speed, approach time, etc.
Then I heard Air Jamaica got rid of the manager for using the airline to finance his hotels, and now the airline is back in the crapper. I remember taking it to a family reunion in summer of 2005. We had an early morning flight to from JFK to KIN. I was looking forward to taking the A321 but instead we were all placed on a North American 757. I didn't mind but I always wondered why the A321 just stayed at the gate next to us.
Now on the way back my mother book a ticket that was supposed to make us fly from KIN to MBJ wait four hours and then fly to JFK. At MBJ all the Air Jamaica flights were delayed and the airport had now air condition. It looked like a semi riot. Then when we flew into KIN the 4 hour wait turned into 7 1/2. Every Air Jamaica flight was delayed right down the line. It was awful, the airport only had huge metallic fans to keep everyone cool. I was at the point where I just wish I could hop on any plane. I was eye the BA 777 that had arrived.
My father flew non rev on AA. First he took Air Jamaica from MBJ to KIN and then quickly hopped on an A300 that was about to leave. To make a long story short before we even got on our plane he was at home watching Tv. He was the one worried about not being able to get home flying non rev after hurricane Dennis.
Everyone I know that takes Air Jamaica now a days has a horror story of the plane still being at the gate when it should be in Jamaica.
Does anyone have a clue what is going on with them?
