New US Livery On YV Dash 8 At PHX

Sat Apr 14, 2007 2:48 am

Just spotted it at PHX at gate B1A on the Mesa ramp. I actually pushed this plane out when it went to Goodyear (GYR) for repaint into the new US livery....looks pretty snazzy. A whole lot better than the America West Express livery they've all been sporting. Looks like Mesa is finally starting to rotate all the Dash's for repaint. I'm heading to work now, I'll take my camera and see if I can snap a picture. I believe it's tail number N987HA, not 100% though.

crj.
Ok, wait for the RJ to pass, cleared to push tail south Mike, and you're cleared to spin #2 in the push.

What a shame that Piedmont didn't get to have the first painted Dash. You'd think the wholly owned would've gotten that honor....

Well, if it helps, the tail number ending in -HA sounds like an ex-Henson aircraft i.e. Piedmont.  wink

Yup, it's N987HA, been here in PHX all day. From what I've heard, the paint is 200lbs heavier than the old paint job, which should help even more in the hot PHX days.

Ahh I remember good ol' ship 987. IIRC the summer weights were something like 37pax 17bags or something. 988HA was even more of a treat when mx would inop the autofeather. Was fun taking 12 pax to FLG when it was booked to cap.

Yup, but then it was sold to Mesa in November of '04. It got an America West Express repaint then, and now they'll have to do it all over again. Silly airlines.  Wink

The Dash spanks hot days in PHX! Although back when I did work for Mesa - one capt doubted the bag count on one of the guymas flights and made them take it all out and do a manual weight. The Dash was something like a half-ton overweight... (no, I did NOT work that flight) It's not that hard to mis-estimate on a bag count - especially on those flights where the pax take everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink in their luggage.

Nice. Will have to keep a look out for those colours at MRY. Mesa flies the Dash8 PHX-MRY-PHX now. 7pm arrival, 6am return. 2h 5m flight, pretty long for a turboprop. I've been wondering if it's the longest flight in the United States on a Dash8 -100,-200,-300. Horizon has longer flights on the Q400, but that's a whole different bird from the -100,-200,-300.

Looks pretty good... Probably see them in PSP and CLD as well! Might try to stop by one of them and try to get a shot...

BTW, anyone know when any of the Mesa CRJ-200s that operate from PHX/LAS are going to be repainted? Air Wisconsin already has lots of CR2s in the NC...

Piedmont's LGA-ROA was blocked longer but that might be because of LGA. They also do/did DCA-HHH as a seasonal saterday only service. That was loooonnnnnnng, even in the -200.

I've mostly seen the new paint job going Int'l to GYM & HMO. Unfortuanately the painters messed up something because now the aft cargo door likes to stick.

I've been asking the same thing. The 200's get used so much, I'm not sure YV can find the time for one to be down for 3 or 4 days to go to GYR to get painted.

Not for long. The Dash 8's last departure from MRY will be Tuesday morning, the 17th. Starting with that afternoon's flight from PHX, it becomes a CRJ-200. The mid-day flight has remained a CRJ (currently a -900), it was the late arrival that stayed overnight and returned to PHX the next morning that was the Dash 8. On some days, it made a late run to LAS and back.

PHX-MRY was the longest Dash 8 flight in the entire US Airways Express system (both east and west).

It looks like there's one to the right of the Dash-8 in that top photo... you can see the tail and the winglet peeking in the shot.

Granted, it could be a CR9, but I've never seen the CR9s do ground-level boarding, they've always been at jetways.

Piedmont's LGA-ROA was blocked longer but that might be because of LGA.

I think your suspicion about LGA is correct. In terms of distance flown the two aren't close:

LGA (40°46'38"N 73°52'21"W) ROA (37°19'32"N 79°58'32"W) 352 nm
PHX (33°26'03"N 112°00'42"W) MRY (36°35'13"N 121°50'35"W) 520 nm

But if you're a passenger belted into the plane 2-plus hours in either case, the distance-flown comparison won't matter much.

DCA-HHH, meanwhile, is 436 nm.

Thanks, I would not have thought of checking Eagle's SJU hub. 2h 50m definitely takes the cake. I always liked the ATR42s when I flew on them with JetLink out of EWR, but 2h 50m on one is stretching it.

I have no idea to be honest. We have a YV mx base here so maybe that was part of the reason. The first inbound from PHX and the last are the ones being downgraded. We also are losing our mainline, though they said it was because a lot of our planes are going in for heavy mx and painting so of course they steal ours! It's always full...very discouraging...oh well, maybe it will be back.

Is it 200 lbs heavier because the new paint is applied on top of the old? Is the the old paint not stripped off before the new paint is applied? This is a question I've always had concerning aircraft repainting.

You know, I'm not 100% sure, I do think they strip the paint, but I overheard some talk that this particluar job was double coated. It would make sense, as the rear door is a pain compared to the other Dash's to open now.

I'm not sure you'll see any HPX CRJ-200s painted in the new colors as HP would rather fly a CR9 than a CR2 (due to costs) on some of those routes flown by the -200s right now... so you'll have the YV DH8s and CR9's making up the USX fleet out of PHX, in addition to the US E190s picking up some of the longer CR9 flying. YV will continue to bridge CR9s thru DFW and IAH, though... although I wouldn't be surprised to see US start DSM and ICT to CLT on the CR9s.

Aha, not so sure now. It looks like ship 353 (A CR2) is heading to GYR tonight...me thinks a repaint is in order, I'll keep an eye out.

I wonder if they'll actually get the grey stripes the right shade as opposed to the Air Wisconsin CR2's that are too dark.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Just flew into TUS on this very same bird. The aircraft looked very imaculate from the outside. It made any Dash 8 crew member feel proud to be at Mesa for once. Incidentally too, this PHX - TUS flight this evening, was the very first Mesa Dash 8 flight on this route in many years. The station staff at TUS seemed a little surprised of what came in since they are extremely used to the normal CRJs. Very nice flight down to TUS this evening overall.  Smile

Yup, it's N987HA, been here in PHX all day. From what I've heard, the paint is 200lbs heavier than the old paint job, which should help even more in the hot PHX days.

I was told that when the aircraft was brought to GYR for the paint job, all of the original paint was striped off. I believe four layers or so of it. As a result of this, the aircraft could have shaved off up to six hundred pounds, which will finally help improve some of the weight restriction issues.  Smile

Is it 200 lbs heavier because the new paint is applied on top of the old? Is the the old paint not stripped off before the new paint is applied? This is a question I've always had concerning aircraft repainting.

It's not proper to double-coat an aircraft, in fact it's the absolute wrong way to paint an aircraft. But mind you, we're talking Mesa here.

Managed to catch it in PHX yesterday, and it's now on the site here...
