DL YYZ-ATL Down To CRJ?

Sat Apr 14, 2007 2:54 am

Okay, something definitely looks wrong here. Toronto with a population of 5M should be large enough for a MD-88 or a 757. Even though the sked still shows a daily MD-88, the other 4 or 5 flights are regulated to CRJs. Doesn't DL have any 757s or 738s to spare to Canada's largest city?  confused

What is AC running on their flights? When DL and AC both started flying the route non-stop in the mid-90's, DL was running mainline equipment, AC ran the CRJ's. Perhaps AC has become the dominant player on the route?

AC seems to flip flop their equipement on this route. Currently a mix of E75s and Jazz CRJs.

Pure frequency over capacity.

During the bankruptcy, Delta has retired alot of aircraft without replacement. The mainline fleet is pretty much maxed out I hear.

DL's problem is likely that YYZ has a large amount of US service and that ATL is not an especially attractive connecting point from YYZ except to Florida and Latin America, both of which are served fairly extensively from YYZ. Also, US' CLT hub competes with ATL more so than from a lot of other cities because US is a *A partner of AC.

DL has 6 dailies YYZ-ATL. Primary aircraft is the CRJ. The M88 is used on 1 or 2 dailies depending on the month and season, along with the CR7.

The 5 daily AC flights are a mix of E175 and CRJ.

Correct. At one point in the mid-90's DL has 4 daily mainline (2 752/ 2 M88) and AC 4 daily 320/319.

I think it is not so much that traffic on this city pair has dropped, but there is alot more nonstop service from YYZ to other US points which has reduced the attraction of the ATL hub for Canadian travellers. Same as with capacity from YYZ to other US hubs.

Yes ! For many, ATL is a transfer ponit only. With so much direct traffic to/from the US, ATL's importance is compromised, and, just maybe, there really is no big natural market here.

pretty much hit the nail on the head there......

the higher-ups seem to like frequency over capacity, therefore more Rental Jets......

I don't think "flip flop" is an accurate analysis. AC wisely matches aircraft type to capacity on most of its routes. I think perhaps we are the industry leader in equipment changes.

Accordingly, AC mainline increases from 1-E175 flight YYZ/ATL to 3-E175 flights during the month of May.

 checkmark  Yep. Departure of the -54x B732 (perfect for the route), -26x B733, -15x B762, -4x B763D (rejected leases), -47x L-10, -129x B-727, -14x MD-11 and less entrants to the fleet - +21x B764, +~50x B757, +8 B777, ~+71 B738, +34 B763D/ER.

An overall loss of around 105 mainline Delta aircraft comparing annual reports from 1997 and 2004. Of course Comair frame count is through the roof compared over the same period, and there are many other additional Delta Connection carriers.

Despite the reduced capacity/demand on this route, I think AirTran could make a successful foray with 2 or 3 daily 712's.

Agreed. Just don't know if being held hostage to the GTAA's extortionist landing fees fits in with their cost strategy. I'm sure those big $$$$ is what has kept Jet Blue away from YYZ (for the time being).

The second one could have been a swap, which is likely to happen. The sched only shows one MD-88 departure each day.
