Non Passengers Get Access To PIT AirMall

Sat Apr 14, 2007 3:56 am

After 3 years of debate, at least some non-passengers are going to get access to the AirMall at PIT. Of course, it's only those staying at the Hyatt, but it's a step in the right direction, I guess. Here's the link

I'm impressed. I thought the TSA would never cave in, period. Nice to see it's also being done in DFW and DTW.

Great news !

Does anyone else think this is a sign of possible major expansion at PIT?

Terrible idea. The only saving grace is that the airport is usually dead enough to handle the extra bodies.

It has nothing to do with traffic at PIT. This is just to get people to go to the AirMall. People that want to shop do not neccesarily want to fly. Frankly, I seriously doubt the TSA could ever handle things if they let non-passengers through security again. We didn't call them Thousands Standing Around for nothing. In PIT, they're really just glorified mall guards, with the county cops being mall cops (sorry ANCFlyer)!

...whatever dude...

I think it's a good idea. Those shops at the airmall have been suffering ever since those security measures were put in place. One time I flew out of there and I walked into a shop down the A concourse, and the cashier in there told me that he'd be lucky to have 2 or 3 customers... throughout an entire 8-hour shift.

Again, USPIT10L, I think you put that beautifully! Maybe back in the days of the US hub this whole thing with security would be necessary, which in fact it probably was. but PIT is no longer a hub for anybody anymore and hardly anyone flies into or out of PIT anymore...

Doubt that but US is building a new North Matrix baggage facility where they have just tore down a section of the E Gates.

Not a bad idea at all. Non- traveling people don't pose a risk to air travel. They aren't getting on the planes and would have to go through security just like normal traveling people.

The idiot TSA reps we have can handle it. They just around and cause problem most of the time anyways. Now maybe they will hire more of them and actually have all 7 lanes and the alternate checkpoint open longer instead of cramming everyone into our damn employee line!!!

I actually learned the other day that if Kent George wanted to, he could get rid of the TSA and hire his own private security team. I guess that it was only mandatory for a few years after 9/11. Kent and the TSA have been fighting for years to get the public back into the Airmall. He has threatened them many times that he will get rid of them if he has to. Doubt that would ever happen though. Too much liability. If the airport was built how it was originally plannes, we would have small checkpoints at every gate area or at the entrances to each concourse. That would make things a bit easier for the public getting over to Airside.

I definately think this is a huge step for PIT. I don't think it neccessarily means PIT is going to be growing anytime soon but things are starting to look up for us.

Not only did not letting the public in hurt sales for the Airmall, but US dropping the hub was the MAIN problem. The public only accounted for 4% of sales actually.

And O&D is up as well as some connecting traffic. Our O&D is higher then CLT.

So that is US' expanded baggage system then??? Wow... now that is interesting!  scratchchin

I think putting the screening machines at the gates would make a ton of sense. I am sure there will be people to flame us for that, regarding the pace for boarding planes and deplaning and what have you...

Most people are already in their gate areas with plenty of time to board. Would be just like going through security on Landside, just in a different location right by your gate. Might make things easier if someone is running late for a flight too. At least the gate agent can tell if you're standing in the checkpoint line and not running down the concourse or center core somewhere.

People that get onto planes have a much higher risk then people going over to shop or send off loved- ones on a flight.

It's good news, but I don't think it's a major deal. The only non-passengers allowed are guests at the Hyatt. And even then, the article says you have to notify the front desk and then get clearance from the airport. I don't know if some people would want to go through all that just to go shopping. They could as easily drive to Robinson.

ummm... ok... So I am putting a flying traveler in danger by buying a newspaper at an MSNBC Pittsburgh News stand or a latte at the coffee shop, or a beer at the TGI Fridays bar...

Why does PIT need an expanded baggage system??
Is the current one overworked??
Surely the addition of the 40+ flights will not stress the current system??
I mean the current system was in effect when PIT was a fortress for US right?

thanks

I'm not really sure why they are building a new one. They built a bigger one of the south end of the landside building a number of years ago as well. I don't know if it's to make it more modern or what. I'll try to find out.

The TSA is a Bush Administration creation that is about as effective as abstinence only. They should just go back to the old screening and look at other methods. Weapons, banned items and unscreened people pass through all of the time. What really makes security work is the attentiveness of the passengers and crew.

Many airports have virtually no food or services outside of security so keeping non-passengers out makes it really miserable waiting for passengers to arrive. The TSA should just give it up since their screenings are longer, slower and more invasive but hardly more effective.

Particularly since most people would believe, accurately or not, that the prices at the airport shops would be higher than at comparable mall shops.

Irnthink it is so that bags can be dropped one stop at the US check inrncounters. As it is not, if you fly US you have to carry your bags overrnto the TSA drop point after you check in. The other airlines havernenough space on their half of the landside term. to put that all behind the scenes.

Wow, would've loved to know that in 2002, when I was an intern at ACAA.
