Coulson Group Purchases Martin Mars Water Bombers

Sat Apr 14, 2007 12:09 pm

The Coulson Group of Companies (Port Alberni, BC) signed a deal to purchase Flying Tankers Inc and the maintenance facilities from TimberWest. The two flying tankers based in Sproat Lake, in Port Alberni, BC. The deal was signed earlier this afternoon, and the workers at Flying Tankers were notified that they were under new management. The Flying Tankers operation will receive a new Director of Maintenance from Coulson Aircrane, which will now operate the tankers.

The Deal was signed under the condition that at least one of the two largest Water Bombers in the world will stay in Sproat Lake when they are sold. They will both stay in Port Alberni for a while, but one of them is likely to go to a museum. Coulson is not yet 100% sure what they want to do with the Flying Tankers. A significant aspect of this is that the deal was signed without including the deal with the British Columbia Government to fight the fires. Coulson will probably pursue that contract again quickly.

There have been no news from the press, nor has any been posted on any of the companies web pages, and this is based off inside information from the company.

Interesting news. I will never forget when I was about 11 or 12 at Shawnigan Lake. There was a small forest fire nearby, and the Martin Mars was making really low passes over us. That thing is big and loud!!!

Any new info on which museum is the front-runner? I seem to remember there were several competing for it.

I don't know, I haven't heard anything on which museum it may go to, but I think they both have a few years left on them.

Those sure are amazing boats. i saw them scooping up water once from about 1000 feet away. Massive beasts.
As long as the number of take-offs equals the number of landings...you're doing fine.

The museum at Martin State Airport (KMTN), in Maryland is interested in at least one Mars. Some
funds have been raised but at last report not enough to purchase one outright.

There is also a chain of grocery stores in the Baltimore area Named Mars, after the flying boat built
near-by. One of their stores have a plaque in it with the story behind the name.
