We've monitored Delta up here at MHT
. That carrier had 3x daily MD
a couple years ago and then abruptly pulled them all in favor of little Lawn Darts. Were the MD
-80s running very light? Hardly! They were banging out those planes, and with no competition on the route were extracting good fares. The plausible reason is that Delta had this white elephant terminal in Boston. Designed at a time when Delta had grand plans for Boston, but completed at a time when the carrier was a laughingstock and just (barely) managing to pay its bills...never mind any 'Grand Plans.'
Restaurants and shops in White-Elephantville got angry because foot traffic was soft. So, Delta did the 'wise' thing (emphasis mine) and slashed service at MHT
to force those remaining loyal DL
customers back to Boston and their 'white elephant.' Did it work? Well, many premium DL
customers aren't anymore. They didn't 'obey' DL
's command and go like mind-numbed robots to their Logan flights. Many of them just became another airline's customers. And that 'white elephant' is STILL a 'white elephant' (they've had to put other airlines in there to appease the shop-keepers and restaurants).
The reason it was a water salute is because no black paint could be found.
Delta needed a MHT
water salute like a fish needs a bicycle.
