DL May Take Delivery Of 772LR Two Months From Now!

Mon Apr 16, 2007 5:24 am

....not yet officially confirmed, but splintered chat in forums (this one and others) begs at least for its own thread. Appears that Delta may take the two 772LRs that were originally intended for Air India(n).

i bet the Boeing paint shop engineers will be pissed! imagine doing all that work and then having to do re-do it! Air India always get itchy feet when it comes to new liveries.

Wow...although that may cause a problem with the newly announced BizElite cabin. Would DL be able to get that installed and ordered in such short notice. I guess anything is possible but it would be fantastic to see more 777's coming earlier to DL!

The irony is that DL could well use these 2 LRs to further strengthen its position in India.

It will not cause a problem with the "new" BusinessElite seats because they are already designed and in use at Air Canada! Delta just puts blue leather and blue trim on them and calls them their own. Check out the news release pic on delta.com and compare then to the seats on the newly acquired 77W of AC. THEY ARE THE SAME!

The new BusinessElite seats are made by Contour Premium. Delta's new BusinessElite seats are the same type used on Air Canada's and Virgin Atlantic's new business class. Delta's current BusinessElite seats are made by B/E Aerospace.

I wonder if the 777-200LRs will use the slimline economy seats that will be used on the 737-800s and domestic 767-300s. Recaro's CL3610 seat appears to be one of the best economy class seats offered.

There is a thread on another aviation related website that says that DL is going to rework its Africa services and begin flying ATL-JNB nonstop, shift is DKR service to JFK and extend it to NBO for a JFK-DKR-NBO routing.

Whether true or not, DL has no shortage of options to deploy any early deliveries of 777s - of any variety.

And also, what are the chances, if the 77L's do go to Delta, that they will be recieving the new Delta paint job?

An alternate theory...

PIA will take these aircraft now they have 2 injured birds. Perhaps this will settle the dispute in Kashmir?  sarcastic

While I've always been expecting JFK-DKR-NBO to happen sometime, I'm surprised that DL would actually be considering doing ATL-JNB nonstop, as I seem to recall a fairly recent interview with Grinstein in which he stated his primary interest for the 77L would be for ATL-BOM if DL didn't get any China rights for 2008.

2 Questions:

If they have the AI seats, will they take these out and put the DL seats in?

Will it keep the registration VT-ALA or get a new one registered in the US? Sorry that I don't know that much about registration and rules, etc.

Guys - the whole reason on why AI is delaying taking these birds is that supposedly they changed their minds on the seats at the last minute (after the a/c were ready). And the new suppliers seats supposedly did not meet some checks and hence causing further delays. And now that AI/IC are merging, that's causing even further delays. Hence in summary:

* The 3 772LR a/c VT-ALA, ALB and ALC most probably don't have any seats in them, maybe the galleys are also not ready yet!

So if these do possibly go to DL (I personally doubt it though, given that AI is already so bloody short on long haul a/c), then all DL needs to do is the plunk in their choice of seats/IFE and have the birds repainted!

Not true. They will be the same as AC's. The VS seat requires you to get out of the seat before lowering the seat into the flat position.

Delta may get a great present coming out of BK, much sooner then any one thought. While 2 new 772LR would help they are still only 2 planes. I have witnessed enough on this board wriiten about the possible uses of DL's new 772LR fleet 30 examples wouldn't be enough.

Hope fully AI will still take delivery of these two aircraft, as the original post says "may not take delivery" so let's see what happens.

AI would be crazy not to take these aircraft; they are a very important part of the new Air India which will include the merger with Indian, adding A320 series aircraft and the 787. The new 777-200/LRs will finally be able to open many new routes for AI inlcuding nonstop flights to the US east and west coasts.

DL hasn't made a single unscheduled stop in MAN for fuel. MAN has been used as a stop because DL has not been able to carry full baggage and pax on some days. MAN stops are due to payload restrictions, not the inability of the 777 to make the flight. It has been ALOFT for as long as 16.75 hrs. The problem is the ER can't carry full pax and baggage, let alone cargo.

Alitalia 744,

There are 5 772LR for Delta before any of the Air India stuff came up. DL may get more then 2 772LR's from Air India so I am not sure of the exact number, AI does have 8 LR's on order as well as 15 773ER's.

Still sounds like a fuel stop to me.

If DL didn't want to carry full pax and bags, then they wouldn't need to stop MAN for fuel. Are you saying they don't add any fuel when they stop in MAN?

Well, until they get these a/c, there will be fuel stops on some days. Maybe DL can pick up all the a/c AI has ordered. At least the LR's will be useful to DL.

While there were a couple of Delta press releases where they (Delta) indicated that they would convert a total of five -200ERs to -200LRs, the Boeing Orders and Deliveries website (as of end March 2007) still does not reflect this. Now this could be because of an error in the website data, but the most reasonable explanation that the contract change to convert the -ERs to -LRs has not been finalized.

I think it is unlikely that these two frames being discussed are part of an additional procurement by Delta, just an earlier delivery schedule on two (or three(?)) of these five yet-to-be-converted orders.

It is possible that DL could convert the AI aircraft into additional a/c if Boeing can build 2 additional a/c for both AI and DL - unless AI decides they don't want them. As of now, the proposal is for DL and AI simply to trade delivery positions.
