OOL & New Long Haul Business?

Mon Apr 16, 2007 8:18 am

now that OOL runway extensions are now complete, are they likely to get much new longhaul business in the short term?

http://www.goldcoastairport.com.au/internationalbusiness.htm

Apparently, OOL has none of the traffic rights restrictions of BNE, SYD or MEL. Would any airline who can't at present get into one of these airports look at OOL instead?

Could OOL actually attract passengers from brisbane or the southside of brisbane? With new road access(Tugan bypass) almost complete could airlines tempt passngers to fly longhaul out of OOL rather than BNE?

OOL claims to be low cost & can take up to B777/A340 aircraft with new 2492 metre runway.

http://www.goldcoastairport.com.au/p...hnicalOperatingCapabilityJan07.pdf

As the crow flies BNE & OOL are only ~59 miles/95kms apart. Travelling time by road between the 2 with no traffic jams is probably just over an hour. The log jams that currently occur where the motorway meets the coast road at Tugan will be largely diminshed when Tugan bypass is finished as thru traffic in both directions will stay on motorway freeing up access to airport.

The only hard thing, is how would passengers not from Brisbane get to & from airport? Public transport is messy.

Runway might not be long enough for 744 with max load to reach HKG ??? Anyone know for sure?

Depends of what kind of passengers you are thinking about. As the airport says itself, it low-cost. This means that you've to walk on the ramp to reach the aircraft and to board through stairs. Those willing to come down from BNE and experience a different kind of airport with no fingers to board, and so on, they'll come. My perception of Coolangatta is really one of an airport serving the surf industry of the Gold Coast.

The route is 3790nm, and from OOL I don't expect the aircraft to be heavily ladden with cargo. I'm no pilot of course, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a B744 full of people (359) and their luggages can take off from a ~2500m runway.

Zeke now don't toy with me by getting me all excited with this statement. Boy I hope you are right, because from what I see of their prices and product on their LGW run they look very impressive. Mind you I haven't actually experienced them and I do realize that it is just a glossy web site but I think they would do well in to OOL. BNE & OOL are basically one big city so there is a huge catchment area which is growing extremely fast.

I was informed that China Airlines and Cathay Pacific have shown interest in flying to OOL (may be past interest or still current). I can't see a huge number of airlines commencing services, with close proximity to Brisbane (with much better facilities).

Interesting to note that QF180 is operating NRT-OOL-MEL (departing NRT on 28 June) with the A330-300.

Some back of the envelope calculations, in 2500m the TOW would be restricted to about 340t.

Say 90-100t of fuel (744 about 10t/hr), and a OEW of 190t, that would give about 50-60t of available payload, enough for full pax plus some cargo.

Its more like 4042 nm along the designated airways.

Do know, just what you hear. They also seem to be planning a number of north America destinations.

OOL-HKG-LGW is about 18-19 hrs, if they have 2 aircraft doing that a day, that is pretty good utilisation.

359 pax !!!

What about 440 or more.

Oasis surely have a reasonably high density seating configuration. Freight into OOL from HKG could be huge, as stuff all difference to BNE. Can OOL handle much freight?

Many companies are setting up head ofice in BNE region, who import from China, as road freight south to SYD eg. is cheap as backloading, so cheap distribution rather than the other way around which is expensive & congested at SYD.

I'm thinking EK. They are desperate to get more flights to Australia. They could route a 345 non stop to BNE and then a 773 to OOL via SIN. Jetstar might also be interested?

Oasis' 744's are only configured with 359 thats what amazes me about their prices. Business class at half the price of legacy carriers but still with 60" pitch.

There has been rumours around that a Middle Eastern carrier was going to do season flights into OOL once the runway upgrade was complete. From May - July the Cold Coast is the number 1 Australian destination for Middle Eastern tourism.

Oasis Airlines is planning to come to the Gold Coast as it is cheap, its not competing with Cathay Pacific and its the Gold Coast! EK definetly will do seasonal I think. Maybe Eithad (That would be so cool!). Qantas has shown no interest (cause there slack) and Jetstar was at one stage looking at KIX. Cathay, Air NZ, SQ (doubt it will happen) and JAL have all shown alot of interest!

Have heard there is some interest from a low cost North American carrier, who might fly 1 stop to North America (not LAX or SFO) but to place people actually want to go to, not pass thru.

Maybe as a cheaper alternative to BNE. They might use train & coach from parts of BNE, but really only 1 hours drive from most of Brisbane to OOL, as long as not in peak hour.

The Southwest effect - I think it was something like 2 hours people in the U.S. were prepared to drive to get low cost flights.

just heard they may be some regular (not sure what that means in reality) charters to ports not currently flown to in NZ, from either BNE or OOL or both.

Anyway else here anything like this?
