Flybe Closes BRS' Bacon Routes

Mon Apr 16, 2007 10:01 pm

Quite major news for Bristol Airport...

http://www.forbes.com/business/feeds/afx/2007/04/16/afx3614426.html

Quoting Forbes / AFX:
LONDON (Thomson Financial) - UK regional airline Flybe said it has closed one of the operating bases of BA Connect, the loss-making former UK regional operation of British Airways PLC that it purchased last month, as it announced the appointment of a new chief financial officer.

A spokesman for Flybe confirmed a Financial Times report claiming that it has shut Bristol, where the BA routes were heavily loss-making, with the loss of a small number of ground handling jobs.

Exeter-based Flybe had decided Bristol was surplus to requirements due to the proximity of the airline's base at Exeter and another at Birmingham, the spokesman said.

Some of the routes were already served by Easyjet (EDI, GLA and CDG which they have doubled the frequency off). Easyjet ahve taken over the MXP route. However FRA, DUS, MUC and ZRH are currently unserved

BE have kept their JER service, which they operated prior to the BACON deal

Perhaps an opportunity for Air Southwest to expand? Though I can't quite see them going international yet.

Nah I think one of CWL's LCC's will open these routes... bmiBaby seem to be expanding more than normally lately? and the new airline flyforbeans are also gonna be opening new routes!

However I do wonder why BACON operated these routes in the first place if they were loss-incurring??
