Any US Airports That Still Have 70s/80's Terminals

Mon Jul 31, 2000 6:24 am

I want to know if there are any airports in the USA that have 70s/80s style terminals that have yet to updated but haven't yet. If so then when are they to be updated. I want to get to one before it is updated and take alot of photos of the terminal.

Newark is all 70s, or earlier. Well, except for the Terminal C fingers which are 80s or later.

Terminal C is getting a new section of terminal, they recently built (1996) an International Arrivals Building at Terminal B. Other new things are Parking Decks at Terminal C and Lot E, and a new Tower.

Oh, and the Monorail is relatively new, but the airport was built with it in mind.

Detroit is possibly the most old and outdated airport of them all!! The concourses are small and narrow, and hell (when two DC-10 and one 747 flights are at three gates right next to each other). Hopefully the new terminal will be better..

Go to SAN. All of the terminals except the terminal 2 extension were built in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. In the old part of terminal 2, I bet a tall person could even touch the ceiling!

I agree Detroit Metro's non-Northwest terminal is very retro 60's/70's.

sacramento's Terminal 2 is as well.

Kansas City International has not been updated since it was constructed in the late 1970's. It has a wood and concrete interior.

Also, most of Salt Lake City still dates to the Western Airliners era. Delta has done some improvements, but the city is currently building a new terminal, so I wouldn't expect to see too much.

The end of the A concorse at Seattle-Tacoma is pretty old. This is home to the TWA flights. The rest of SEA is prettty nicde with the recently renovated North and South Sattelites.

How about the TWA terminal at JFK. Beautiful 60's architecture. Also Dulles and Lambert in St. Louie!

IAD's main terminal is 60's, but it looks really awsome, doesnt need to be updated.

ORD (where i live) both Terminals 2 and 3 are vwey 70's and are cramped. American is doing some work on concourse G in terminal 3 right now, Delta is doing some work in the L concourse on terminal 3. Other than that, its pretty old. UA updated its Terminal 1 like 10 years ago, but its starting to look like shit. sorry.

DTW's A & B concourses (non NWA gates) gives you the best feel of 60's nostalgia in all of the U.S. --Coming off of a flight and walking through the concourse, you'd swear you're about to see a bunch beehive hairdos, go-go boots, hippies, and the Supremes all in line to board a TWA DC8.

I love it!

Try MKE most of the terminals there were built in the 60's or 70's.

Northwest's terminal is the former North Central terminal and the concourse was built in 1970. This terminal is a big circle but has a really sharpe design to it. I think Northwest may have made some improvements to it I forgot what it looked like when North Central/Republic used it.

The concourse where United and a few MWE gates are were built in 1967. The walls have been redone and the waiting areas have been updated somewhat.

The last concouse was built in 1977 I think its the former Eastern, Ozark and Midstate terminal. I don't think any areas of this terminal have had any improvements other than new carpeting.
The right decision at the wrong time, is still a wrong decision. "Hal Carr"

Most of the gates at San Jose CA (SJC) terminal C do not have jetways as of July 2000. Passengers walk out on the apron, and climb portable or, for MD8/9X, front stairs extending from the aircraft. In some cases, passengers need to walk around the wing tips to use the rear stairway. For a city which claims to be "capitol of Silicon Valley", this situation is astonishing behind the times. For persons interesting in airplanes, airlines, and their history, it's kinda cool.

At least the last time I was at ORD, 1994 I think (yes that was a long time ago) Terminal Two still had linoleum floors and those ugly molded plastic seats in the waiting area, and the aging suspending ceiling panels and awful flourscent lights.

TWA902fly... I don't know how you can call United's terminal one sh!t. The openess of the place... you could land a Cessna in the center walkway area, the brightness, the tasteful colors of the tile, the classical Victorian railway styling of the exposed steel. I remember going there when I was 7 years old and staring in awe at a DC-10 parked on the C concourse as we came out of the tunnel. (to a 7 year old it was BIG).

Also.. terminal 2 at Sky Harbor is actually a GOOD piece of 60's architecture. I don't think there ever has been any major remodles there. Each airline has updated their own gate areas. Though as late as 1993 or 94 USair still had some gate signs in the old old colors, from the days after they changed from Alleghany.

DesertJets--
Don't even bother with TWA902FLY--every comment coming out of his mouth is anti-this and anti-that...I try no to take 5 year-olds seriously.

To the topic--
Like someone else said, SMF's Terminal "B" is the perfect example of a 60's-era terminal. Original signage, floors, ceilings, shoot--even the JETWAYS date back from the 60's!!

Definetely DSM... The Bee Gee's start playing in my head everytime I walk in there. But at least they repainted the outside from "disco blue" to beige.

ABQ. Not the A and B concourses, but the long lost C Gates which are no longer used. TWA used to use the C Gates until the late 80's and the area still has the 70's/80's motif. If you can get up there it is a sight if you want to remember the 70's/80's. If you're ever at ABQ, go to the ticketing level and keep heading towards the west end and it will keep getting older and older, then take the escalator (very 70'ish) up to the C Gates if it isn't barcaded.

in terminal A and C and maybe E at DFW, they have those tight "bucket" molded seats, i have been dying for those to get taken out and get some real seats in there.

I flew ORD-LGA last December and it appeared to me that the UA terminal at LGA may predate 1970. I was amazed how antoiquated the place was. Compared to ORD and other airports I have visited around the world it was vintage 60's. UA's Red Carpet lounge in LAX was a bit of a 70s throwback with some truly awful yellow furniture.

Try CVG's older two concourses, terminals 1 & 2...they're *very* old, dark, and cramped in the 70s style, especially 1. Moreover, the most annoying thing about the place is that the connecting walkways between the terminals have full-size windows facing the parking garage...but only floor-level windows facing the airfield. What? How does that make any sense?

Also, Cleveland Hopkins is sort of retro-70s in form, except that it looks pretty darn good. I'm assuming it has seen extensive renovation in recent years. However, the reason I say it's retro-70s in form is because the concourses are rather cramped, the food and merchandise selections are slim, and if you look, you can see various old hangars on the airfield, including a NASA one! It's a nice airport, but it desperately needs some expansion.

The observation deck is a nice touch, though! Peeling floor surface and all...

Detroit´s International terminal is left like it was set up in the early 70´s. Even a Space-Invader video-game can still be played there. But it was very clean and carpets and furniture were in good condition. So I liked the atmosphere there very much. Not so cold and boring like most other airports are.

I agree with Fly777Ual on with Sacremento's terminal. But what about the north (United Airlines)Terminal in SFO. It looks old, and feels sort of dirty.Heck, everything in the UAL terminal at SFO is old, as well as LAX, and washington dullles.
The north terminal is much older than the US airways terminal (south) at SFO. That terminal feels new, and its much more inviting.

All I know is that SMC's new terminal is quite stunning and beautiful.

As for SFO's North Terminal, which is used by UA--I believe that there are plans to rebuild most of this terminal once the work on the new International Terminal and the BART/parking garage light-rail are finished in the fall of 2001. One idea being bandied about is for a dedicated North Terminal US Customs/Immigration area for UA international flights only, so the new International Terminal on the south side can be used for more flights by other international airlines. Anyone who watches the traffic at SFO today notes that the current International Terminal is mostly hogged by UA flights.

As for SJC's old Terminal C, there are plans to eventually tear it all down and rebuild it with a brand new terminal that can support up to 30 gates, plus an all-new US Customs/Immigration area for AA international flights. I'll have to check SJC's web site to see what are the current plans, though.
