CLT- Nation's Fastest Growing Airport

Thu Apr 19, 2007 4:11 am

From an article in the Charlotte Observer today... http://charlotte.com/122/story/89528.html

With lower fares and additional competition CLT is handling 9,300 additional passengers a day on average in the past six months for a total of 1.7 million extra O&D passengers. This is a growth rate of 13% compared with the same period last year. JFK has the second highest growth rate at 11.2%. Go Charlotte!!!

To handle the extra capacity US Airways is bringing in 49 new ticket and gate agents. A new 9,000 foot runway is underway, the airports fourth, and is slated to be complete by 2008. Eight new gates on one wing of concourse E will begin construction this summer. A further 12 gates will follow in the fall. A second 3,000 parking deck located next to an identical parking deck built last year will open in the next few weeks. A 4,000 parking deck will follow and begin construction later this summer. The airport is also considering building a new concourse rumored to be a new international concourse where the rental car facilities are at now. The hourly parking garages will be demolished and rebuilt as a hourly/rental car garage housing all rental companies. The front lobby will then be extended out 25ft towards the parking decks in order to increase the size of the ticketing and security checkpoint areas.

It's been open for at least a week, and it (and its twin) are some of the most attractive parking decks anywhere. The airport deserves kudos for these.

This has been in the master plan for some time, but I don't see why it would need to be international.

That would be nice... how about making baggage claim less dark and crowded.

And just as a side note, I'd take anything read in the Observer with a grain of salt... it's not the greatest paper.

I think they'd make the new one international and change the current international (D) to domestic, as it would be closer to the other domestic concourses for connections than the new one.

Damn, I still remember going to the airport, and all they had for parking was just the area from the terminal and then past the control tower that was in the middle of the parking lot. I was just in there about a month ago, and wow, things have changed much over the years, since the current terminal has been around.

The baggage claim area definitely needs improvement. It's the one thing that I remember from my trip last year when I was connecting through CLT. More lighting and space would be a welcome improvement.

Great to see this news...

I only have experience of Charlotte Airport as when I am connecting through the airport.

Never had any issues and the airport is by the easiest airport I have experienced travelling through the US. Passport and Customs always seem far easier than other US Airports.

Even though the airport seems busy as times, it does always seem very light and breezy.

Im surprised the airport needs to extend so quickly...

I suppose I am there when the airport is quieting down for the evening... But the D concourse where the LGW flight leaves is always deserted as we board for our flight back to the UK.

I heard at one point they were going to build a commuter checkin terminal in front of concourse E with counters and baggage claim. Did that go away?

Have they said if they viewing park will go away when they move roads and such for the new runway?

During the time I was stationed in DC my wife was stationed in CLT. I commuted through CLT constantly, at least twice a week, usually more. It is a great airport.

Glad to see it continues to grow and prosper.

I left the area in 2001, and hadn't been back through CLT until this past October. I was very pleasantly surprised with the new E Commuter concourse, far and away better than what had been there.

Press on CLT.

Wow, impressive. They also had a link to that article on the usatoday airline blog.

Does anyone know if they still have the rocking chairs in the terminal. I loved those.

You mean you didn't like the portable modular units used as gate spaces? You're crazy man...

They did as of a few months ago.

Definitely. That was a great idea that has been duplicated in other places. A great use of otherwise empty space.

...and the power cables hanging in the trees!

The terminal is actually very pleasant for it's size. yes, it's a pain to get from E gates to B gates, but in comparison to other airports it's great.

I connected there for over 4 years, and had few complaints about the place.

In terms of # of flights, it's up there with LAX and PHX, somewhere like #6 or #7 overall - surprizing to some!

Not only do I get Star Alliance miles for flying US, I also get to connect at an airport that I think is better to connect at than ATL on my way to TPA!

They haven't said, but it wouldn't have to (in theory), and they could always put in a new one. If it's made it this far, it's likely they'll have a park of some sort. It's clearly important to Jerry Orr and friends.

I asked that very question a few weeks ago and the response from the Airport is that the Airport Overlook will be relocated but they have not identified that site yet.

Are you guys refering to that observation deck at the Carolinas Aviation Museum, or is there another observation park that I'm not aware of?

There's a park on the west side of the airport overlooking 18R/36L off of Old Dowd Road. It's got a parking lot and some benches just outside the fence.

I've heard rumors some time ago that the aviation museum that is located on the East end of the airport next to 18L will be relocating to a bigger facility near the US Airways hanger and the old terminal that is used by cargo now. From what I understand it will include a state of the art observation tower with unobstructed views of at least the three current runways and will include speakers broadcasting the tower frequency. I am not sure if this is still the case or if they are still working on the funding for it but I think that would be awesome. The airport definitely needs a observation area, the one they currently have is very popular.

How about the parking lot at the 24 hour post office - used to be the Terminal area for CLT back in the 1980s. You can see a LOT from there.

The current RWYs can handle an A380 as can nearly all major U.S. airports, but the probability of CLT seeing one is about as good as the chance of snow at TOM.

Nice, I haven't been there in 20 or so years, but I remember them every year as a kid when I used to connect from SDF to ILM (after camp) to meet my parents at Wrightsville Bch for the summer.
