Airways Mag Curse?

Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:44 am

i was going through some old airwasy magazines and i noticed an article on ZIP, Harmony and Jetsgo and within a few months those airlines folded, or discontinued service within a few months of the article. i think they did one on ATA right before they gave WN alot of there service and gates, and independence Air but we knew Independence Air was doomed from the start, using RJ's the We got planes, we got gates what the hell" philosophy didnt work. and i just remebered a hooters Air article, anyone eles notice this?

Never really noticed, but now that you mentioned it, it seems pretty clear that they keep picking airlines that are about to go away...

Also add JetMagic to that list- it might not have been Airways, but they were in one of those magazines either the month or the month before they folded. Aviation's example of the Sports Illustrated Curse?

May not be a curse so much, likely that those carriers that are "challenged" make the most interesting stories.

Airliners has had the same problem. In 1999 they did an article on WinAir, which managed to fold before press time. They noted the shutdown it in the editor's column; they didn't alter the article itself.

Thought about this very thing a month or so ago. Airliners Mag had a decent spread on Harmony. Next thing I know - poof - Harmony was done.

They must have something against Canadian airlines, you can add Canada3000 and Canadian to that list ....  scratchchin

Hmmmm, that is an interesting observation. But some of those articles were undoubtedly done shortly after the airlines were established, and then they didn't last too long. But then think about all the carriers profiled that still are around. Probably jetBlue, ....uh.....let's see.....well, ok, maybe not.

Your theory doesn't work here. ATA is still around and will be for the foreseeable future. All of those other airlines ceased all service and went out of business.

I thought the same thing, but had the questions in the mind after reading about the CEO's sudden departure from the company.

Interesting observation. I actually wrote the ZIP, Harmony and Canadian stories for Airways. The Canadian story actually appeared after they were bought out by Air Canada. CP had been stringing me along for two years to get an interview with one of their executives.

As a few people pointed out, there are many airlines that have been profiled in the magazine that are still doing fine.

Cheers,

K.

Hey Ken! Just another observation, you did the article on LTU a couple of months back, and now they're tied up with Air Berlin .....  scratchchin   Wink

Well, There are two possible explanations,

1) In lieu of their problems, these airlines where looking into a good industry profile as an additional PR tool to make themselves look good, to their PAX, peers and/or potential investors.

2) Maybe the magazine has the same jinx as the front page of Sports Illustrated

There was a cover photo of the UA 772 in new colors, and UA started doing better afterwards.

Actually it's just mathematics. How many stable long-lasing airlines are there? How long would it be before these magazines have profiled them all? A couple years at most. Then what will the magazine do? They have to put out issues every month, so in the end they will profile a number of airlines that fail because that is the fate of more than half of all airline startups. It's not a curse, but merely the normal workings of the airline industry.

Good point, but I think there have been a few close coincidences, when a magazine prints an article and the following month the airline ceases to be.

Airliners did one on My Travel a few months back, now they are merging. They did Jets Go as well and they went under a few months after (although they were in a bit of bother at the time).

I must agree with your reasoning there though, sound logic  Smile

There was also an interview with the CEO of JetBlue (basically singing its operational praises) prior to the Valentine's Day fiasco, which ironically was featured in an issue right around Feb 2007.

Too late. I have a copy of an Airways magazine saluting the retirement of the DC-10s, I got it just after I started training for Worldwide in January. It was only a partial cover, other airlines were the main focus, but NWA was on the cover! Look out!  Wink

Ha,ha,ha,ha!!! this is hilarious!
I thought the same thing a few years ago! Almost every airline on the cover already dissapeared or is in banckruptcy!

Just a coincidence. But still...

When did Harmony fold? A trip last summer to Vancouver I saw a HMY (Harmony) ac at the gate.

Thanks for the info. I am a little suprised, I thought the airline was doing well. This industry is so volitale that anything can happen suddenly. It is to bad, I liked their philosophy in how employees should be treated. If you treat your employees with respect, they will in turn have fun and give their guests a better flying experience. The legacies need to take this lesson onboard. Flying should be a fun experience, something the legacies have forgotten

April 2004 issue. Though the article is not a profile of Midwest, but one describing the process of delivering a new airplane to a customer, and the article follows a Midwest 717 at LGB.

Outstanding........I see Airtran and Southwest have been on there as well. So looks like this one doesn't hold either.....

Add these two airlines to the list:

Airways also did a big article on Air Paradise International shortly before they folded. And they were going to do an article on Air Bourbon, but they had to pull it from the issue at the last second due to the airline's sudden collapse.

IIRC the same thing happened to Duo Airways based at BHX - by the time the issue was in print, Duo had ceased operations - the irony is all those stories end with a similar corny summary like, 'and it's clear that the future of xyz airlines is flying high...'!

So, the bottom line would be that if your Airline was in the Featured Article of Airways Magazine call a "witch doctor" because is most definitely "Bad JuJu" my friend....  stirthepot
