FedEx delivers gift plane to Owens

Owens Community College received a donation from FedEx Express, and it touched down about 11 a.m. yesterday at Metcalf Field in Wood County’s Lake Township: a 40-year-old Boeing 727-100.

The aircraft’s wings will be removed and the body will be transported by land, probably within the next 30 days, to the Center for Emergency Preparedness on Owens’ Perrysburg Township campus, said Paul Unger, executive vice president and provost.

At Owens, the wings will be reattached and the interior outfitted as a commercial passenger plane. The plane will be parked on a tarmac at the center for use in training exercises that will simulate difficulties aboard passenger craft, from medical emergencies to hijackings, hostage takings, and bomb threats.

The plane was decommissioned by FedEx, and its last flight was from the company’s hometown, Memphis, to Metcalf Field, Mr. Unger said.

The company valued the donation at $450,000.

Looks like it landed on runway 4 at Metcalf field which is only 3,800 feet. Woulda been a neat landing to see

This is not the first one Fred has donated to a college, they usually get used in aero engineering classes.Memphis Aero Tech got one as well . He doesn't have to come up with the money to scrap the plane and gets a tax break for the donation, so its not completely a selfless motive.

Aye Ziggy Zoomba!

When did they do that? Or have they? I graduated from there in December of 2003 and didn't hear of this.

Back in January Camden Municipal Airport (CDH) in Arkansas got a B727 for Southern Arkansas University's maintenance program. It is a General aviation airport in south central arkansas and the 727 definately stands out!
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

BGSU doesn't have a 727, I was just implying that FX take another 727 and send it to BGSU instead  silly

I could be wrong but I think Purdue has 1 or 2.

It's not just colleges either, last year they donated one to ABE for fire training as well.

It's a good deal for everyone, well, accept the IRS. haha.

I am just curious... This is the first time I have heard of anything like this (probably due to the fact that I have only recently been this interested in aviation), so what do universities do with these aircraft. Will they be used as charter equipment like if sports teams/clubs/etc have any scheduled trip somewhere? I imagine this would be the intended use. It sure beats seeing these planes going to the desert, aka grave yard... Now if only West Chester could get one, or Millersville! (although, the Ville has a hot air balloon...)

i think they use them as training tools for the students, so they can apply what they've learned in class to an actual aircraft. I would assume that before the aircraft is handed over to the university that Fedex will make sure it's not flyable.

These airplanes have made their final flight, they are being donated to schools to use for educational purposes, like for soon to be A&P mechanics, or apparently for fire and evacuation training.

oh... well in quite a few ways... WHAT A BUMMER!!! But, it's for educational purposes. What could be a better way than using a hands-on demo really??? I suppose they'll be used for simulations of emergency/mx situations then. Heck, at least they're not going to be chopped up and shipped to the dump in the desert...

FEDEX also donated a 721 to Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) for their Mechanical Technology: Aircraft Maintenance (AAS) program. I saw it a few months ago at the current Oneida County Airport(the old Griffis Air Force Base).

There's also the nose section that WAS a 727-100 at the children's museum in MEM and I thought another -100 at the A&P school.

There's one at Bolton Field in Columbus (OH). I think it went to Columbus State Community College, IIRC.

There's an ex-United 727 hanging in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Flew in to Meigs for its last flight, and then barged the 50 blocks south to the museum.

http://www.msichicago.org/exhibit/transport/flight/727.html

You have great access to the aircraft, where the front and back port-side doors open onto the upper floor of the museum (the left wing is gone), which you can see on the far side of the aircraft in the picture.

Every half hour they have a "flight" and run the gear up and down, wiggle some of the control surfaces, and flash some of the lights. There's usually a retired UA pilot on hand to answer questions.

An excellent exhibit.

Southern Illinois University, at Carbondale (the original) has a 737-200 from United. The got it in 1998. It is used for A&P classes. The plane is all painted up in Southern Illinois University colors. UA flew it over the campus a few times for photos. It is parked at the Southern Illinois Airport with part of its tail sticking out of the door.

Nice to see a school receive a donation that is something other than an old decrepit 732.

There's nothing quite like a trijet.
