Which 747 Did I See

Sat Apr 21, 2007 12:11 pm

I'm up in BIL visiting relatives (leaving tomorrow), and the other day, I believe it was Wednesday, I was driving down Rimrock Road, and I saw a huge plane on approach to the airport. It was green in coloration, I wasn't sure what it was. When I read the paper the next day, there was a picture of it, and a little blurb about it landing at the airport here.

pretty cool to see it.

Umm...there is no 747-800, nor is there a prototype.

There's a 747-8 which is still being designed though.  Wink

You probably saw this DREAM)LIFTER which is an LCF (not a 747-8)  Smile

You saw the 747LCF, also known as "dreamlifter" and it's there to pick up parts for the 787.

There is no 747-8 anywhere but on paper, in computers, and a few scale models for the wind tunnel and marketing purposes.

That would explain it. I didn't think a full-scale one had been built yet. Teh newspaper around here sucks, so it figures they'd get it wrong.
But still, it was an impressive plane nonetheless.

That is indeed what the fine folks at the Billings Gazettte thought they saw.
In case they change the photo caption, at this time it shows the LCF as an "experimental version of Boeing's 747-8".

I'll give you a PM next time I'm up this way. Quite a bit of traffic for an airport not serving that many people. SFO-BIL on UA will be interesting to see this summer too.

Do you go to MSU-B?

I thought it was odd. I didn't think one was built, and if it had been, I was surprised it could be cranked out that fast.
A huge gaffe on their part, though not totally unforseen, considering other gaffes on their part.

I remember seeing the LCF when I was in Seattle a couple months back. Pretty cool to see in person after looking at a million pictures of it.

OMG, that caption for the photo is so innacurate I couldn't help but leave a comment on that web page. It hurts to read newspapers sometimes and the things they print as fact.

Obviously not in BIL. I thought he was writing from Italy.  Smile

Wow, I'm curious, why was the dreamlifter in Billings? I'm from there, and I know Boeing brings 747s, 767s, and 777s through on a regular basis, but I am confused as to why they'd bring in the 747LCF.

It's in flight testing, so it's the same reason they bring those other widebodies through there.

Okay, cool. Thanks for the info. I'm still in Florida at school, so I unfortunately didn't get to see it.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe they fuel aircraft here before departing to their test base north of GGW at the old airbase or back to BWI / PAE...

A lot of the time when they come through BIL, they just shoot landings and then continue on. I remember when NW was still taking deliveries of 744s, we'd see them up there all the time.

It IS a freighter. As for a pax version, it's not really possible since the cargo area is unpressurized. Besides which, you'd hit the weight limit way before the volume limit with pax in that hull.

As a former resident of Montana i must warn you that contrary to the fact that some people can not tell the difference between an LCF and the designing of the 747-8 those concrete caps which are fenced off that scatter the plains of Montana are not for decoration either   and if they could find a way, they would cram as many people as they could into a LCF which i figure about 1,000
