Alitalia-gift Ticket, Credit Card Proof Question

Mon Apr 23, 2007 3:34 am

Can anyone tell me how "Serious" Alitalia is about enforcing the policy of having a picture of the credit card that purchased a ticket if you did not purchase it? They told me I would have to send a copy of the credit card to the tperson I bought the ticket for but I am not able to do that. They are starting the trip in CTA Catania and my experiances with Alitalia and the airport in Catania are that things are normally lax. Well really lax. I called Alitalia but their English operators (my Italian is not yet good enough for that call) all tell me US rules??? Thanks for any info A netters.

I know it's not from an experience with Alitalia, but I faced a similar problem with Iberia for a gift ticket I paid with my credit card, with the person not travelling with me. After a few phone calls and checking their website in various languages (the english version actually didn't gave me the right information for my case, nor did the German one - only the Spanish version contained the appropriate information), I found out that it would be sufficient if I showed up personally at any IB office or airport sales counter to present my credit card together with an ID document there, so that they could enter the now proven existence of this credit card and its owner into the PNR. The person I booked the trip for then was able to fly without any problems, just with the confirmation number and passport/ID card. For AZ, it may be similar (of course, it's AZ, and thus another airline with different regulations, but if you can reach an AZ city office / airport counter, it may be worth a try).

I understood that the problem was that you purchased a ticket to someone else with your credit card, and in that case, the cardholder needs to show up at the check-in counter in order to let the airline check if the ID Card of the buyer and the credit card used to buy the ticket match (to avoid fraud using not properly a stolen credit card number), and now you cannot go to CTA to do that. Is it right? (Sorry if I misunderstood you).

I can tell you that in the case of Iberia, and I assume the others should be more or less the same, they ask you since 3 o 4 years ago to indicate when you book (i.e.: the CCV number (credit card verification number), which is a 3-digits code printed in the back of your card. If you provide this number to the airline, they won't ask you anything about the buyer at check-in, since it is assumed that the cardholder already accepted the transation when the purchase was made. Otherwise, if this number is not given, the cardholder needs to come to the airport with the traveller.

If this CCV number is not given when you book, I think that you can phone Alitalia's call center and ask to incorporate it.

I will not be at CTA though I will eventually drive over to BRU and pick my guest up. I used the CCV code when booking but the Alitalia folks I call only know the "us regs". ( I tried calling the Spain number but got no help in Spanish either) Since I bought the ticket from Europe but I have an APO box which is basically US mail in Europe it gets complicated. I might drive over to DUS in the morning (as it is close to me) and see what the ticket folks say. Thanks for the info friends.

Danke, Gracias, etc.
