FL DL US Making Any Plans For Queen At PHF?

Mon Apr 23, 2007 12:28 pm

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is coming to Virginia in a couple of weeks for the Jamestown 400th anniversary, and the last word I heard was that her plane was going to land at Newport News, as that is the closest commercial airport to Jamestown. So I'm curious if AirTran, Delta, or US Airways have made any plans in advance, such as pre-canceling flights to/from PHF or tweaking the schedule any on May 4th and 5th to work around the visit? I know once the motorcade leaves the airport normal traffic can resume but I'm wondering if airlines normally schedule around this sort of thing if they know about it in advance?

AirTran is a big sponsor of the Jamestown event. I'm talking to a FL Flight Attendant right now who is overnighting in PHF. I asked him to ask the ground crews in the morning, and I'll let you know what I find out.

I know that for airports that deal with Air Force One landings, there's a bit of a buffer around when planes can takeoff and land (in fact, I think no movements on the tarmac are allowed to be done). I'd expect the same exact thing to happen for the Queen - might be a few delays, but that's about it. I'd expect her plane to park on the South Side of the field - far away from the terminals, pretty remote, and there's an access road that heads out right by this area (it's pretty might to the right of Runway 2).

I think her aircraft would probably land at ADW and a helicopter would take her to the Jamestown site

It has been promoted in the media that she will likely be landing at PHF. In January during a visit from Air Force Two at PHF (Vice President Cheney was attending a function in Williamsburg) we reported it as a "dry run" for PHF (who has hosted Air Force Two several times) in preparation for the Queen's visit in May. Although it is not set in stone. If she were to land at a military base instead of a commercial airport, Langley AFB would be the closest (just down the street from PHF, really) but whenever AF1 or AF2 come to Hampton Roads, they use ORF and PHF.

After Jamestown, she is scheduled to attend the Kentucky Derby, so I would expect her plane to land at SDF. From there, she will visit Washington (anybody's guess... IAD, DCA, ADW).

As far as coming into DC, DCA makes the most sense, as it would take just a few minutes to drive from there to DC, and there is enough ramp space near Hangar 7 to accommodate just about anything, provided it can land on a 7000' runway.

When a head of state lands or departs at an airport, no other engines are running as long as her/his aircrafts engines are running, resp. the flight has departed. . Standard rule of protocol.

Does PHF have a lot of activity in general? I didn't even know there was commercial activity there. I am in the VA Beach area in May and June and am wondering if it is worth driving up to PHF for some spotting?

I don't think DCA can handle a B777, which is most likely what she will be using.

The Queen is not like Ego Bush. It's usually normal ops, with a little extra spacing before and after her aircraft and a police escort out of the airport.

I'd expect ADW - I believe Blair has flown into ADW before, and it's a lot easier to secure than a commercial airport.

Well, now that you mention that she'll be coming in on a 777, ADW has to be the obvious choice. There's no way one of those could land at DCA.

PHF is one of AirTran's bigger "small" airports (if that makes any sense), comparable to CAK. They have 3 gates there. Delta (mainline and ASA) has also started to actually compete at PHF despite having a large presence just down the road at ORF. They have 2 gates there and you'll see an occasional MD88. US Airways Express (Piedmont) has a limited presence there with mostly Dash-8s flying to Philly and Charlotte, and zero mainline service.

Spotting: If you are driving down I-64 at just the right time, you'll cause a pileup when the 717 comes in low enough to count the lug-nuts on the wheels. Park at Wal-Mart or Home Depot on Jefferson Ave. But be prepared to wait: it's not as busy as ORF. PHF has a lot of GA traffic too.

I knew that from reading it in Go last month during a flight to Atlanta, but otherwise I would have never known it because there has been no mention of it here in the area. There's a lot of news coverage but no actual marketing that I've seen other than billboards (with no mention of sponsors). I guess the promotional push is in the rest of the country; here in Virginia we already know where Jamestown is.

Back on topic: We just today learned that Her Majesty will address the General Assembly in Richmond during her visit, so I guess RIC is on the table as a possible landing site as well.

Spotting:

Don't forget the access road named "G" avenue that passes by the new ATC tower and ends at the Noland and Smithfield Foods hangars. Also, if you drive on the road past the old terminal (bluish colored) where the old ATC tower and Hampton University's aviation program are located, you can park next to the tarmac, directly behind the FL gates. Just note that the airport police do not seem to be overly spotter-friendly around here.

And just to add, things around the airport get pretty messed up when anyone important comes to town. Perhaps the Queen will come to RIC instead, though it would certainly be neat if she arrived at PHF!

I hope she flies into PHF. Whatever airport Speedbird lands at in SE Virginia, I'll be there - 400D in hand.

...As will I (except my camera is only the 350D  crying  )

At least we will have something to look forward to since Monarch isn't coming to ORF after all.

Oh, and Flynavy, have you seen that DL is bringing a daily 757 in again to ORF?  Big grin

That proposed 32 Sqn ACJ or BBJ to be leased permanently for VIP duties sure takes a long time coming.

OK, now it looks like RIC will be the most likely airport:

An itinerary released by the British Embassy on Tuesday has the queen arriving in Richmond on Thursday, visiting with Gov. Tim Kaine and addressing the General Assembly before making the trip to Williamsburg that evening. The next day she’ll visit Jamestown Settlement, Historic Jamestowne and the College of William & Mary.

And an answer to the question of where in Washington she'll be landing:

Quote:
The royal couple will arrive at Andrews Air Force Base Sunday evening to begin the final leg of their trip, a visit with President Bush and first lady Laura Bush. The day will include arrival speeches, a garden party at the British ambassador’s residence and a state dinner at the White House.

It's not about the ego of President Bush. It's about Secret Service protocol for protecting the President of the United States, whatever that individual's last name.

See post above. At least he's not delaying LAX commercial traffic so that he can get a $400 haircut like his predecessor.

Agree that Andrews is undoubtedly where she'll go when she visits DC.
