Airbus To Hire 1,000 People In Hamburg To Keep A38

Tue Apr 24, 2007 12:53 am

Report from Bloomberg on efforts to ensure the first batch of 25 A380's are completed in accordance with revised schedule agreed in January 2007

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...1085&sid=aUzoiqkFyubg&refer=europe

The article states that 250 permanent engineers and 750 contract workers are being hired in Hamburg to complete the wiring. Sounds like a massive undertaking.

It also states:

Quote:
The new positions won't affect Airbus's goal of cutting 10,000 jobs under the Power8 program targeting 5 billion euros ($6.8 billion) in savings by 2010 and 2.1 billion euros in annual spending reductions afterward. Power8 is meant to recoup cost overruns on the A380 and help Airbus cope with a weak dollar relative to the euro, the currency of most of its costs.

''The hiring is in the context of the A380 recovery and has been planned for quite some time,'' said Kracht, who is based at Airbus headquarters. Power8's workforce cutbacks focus on employees in areas not involved in plane production, such as human resources or information technology. Kracht said the A380 is on target with the schedule set last October.

Now. What they'll really do if Airbus has learned anything at all, is lay people off and rehire them as temps.

That's the way it's done.

Not that easy over here. You cannot simply lay off people without pqay and ask them to come back when needed, like it's done in the States.

The 250 qualified jobs are permament and the other 750 are hired from companies like Manpower or SAdeco, where these people are permanently employed. Airbus signes a cpontract with these companies and the provide the manpower for the contracted time.

That's all. No lay offs. The Power 8 is a completely different ball game. These up to 10000 jobs willbe made redundant by selling the factories where they work to investors. The people will still work there and even for Airbus, but no longer as Airbus employees. Other jobs will be made redundant by natural atrition, and if nothing helps the rest will get severance payments or will be featherbedded in other ways.
