Delta: LAX-McAllen, Texas

Delta appears to be doing fewer new flights from their hub at SLC and increasing the number of flights from LAX. They just announced additional service from Los Angeles International to McAllen, TX to start on June 7th.

LOS ANGELES, April 23, 2007---Delta Air Lines announced two new daily non-stop flights between McAllen-Miller International Airport in McAllen, Texas, and Los Angeles International Airport. The new service begins June 7, 2007.
"McAllen has rapidly transformed from a rural city to a major international trade area that has gained tremendous international recognition," said Glen Hauenstein, executive vice president -- Network Planning and Revenue Management for Delta Air Lines. "It was important for Delta to grow its presence and expand service between these two growing west coast markets and we're excited to be able to do so."
The promotion of international and retail trade, tourism and manufacturing in McAllen is among the most successful along the U.S.-Mexico Border.
"As the metropolitan area of McAllen, Texas continues to attract international investment we must be able to move products and people efficiently," said Keith Patridge, president of the McAllen Economic Development Corporation. "Delta's new direct service from McAllen to Los Angeles will provide our investment community with an efficient and convenient way of accessing the West Coast and Northern Mexico."
To celebrate its growth and expansion in these two important markets, Delta is offering customers a special introductory fare of $139* each way based on roundtrip travel.

The MFE flights were covered in this thread about a week ago. Seems kinda strange to me, but who knows what DL is thinking.

Lord, why McAllen?

The only thing around McAllen is South Padre Island. We've got a place there, and have had one for many years. And while it has grown significantly as a tourist destination with a lot of new fancy restaurants, hotels, and condominiums, I can hardly see why DL wants a non-stop LAX-McAllen. HRL (Harlingen) is usually where all the South Padre people fly into.

we run 737-800 a/c durign the holiday seasons b/t these two cities, so there certainly is a demand there for pax.

Isn't this flight more so they can rotate the plane in and out of maintenance?

Maybe DL is trying to capture some of the traffic to a lot of the manufacturing going on in Reynosa, Mexico. One of our major customers moved all manufacturing from Moorpark, California to Reynosa. Headquarters is still in LA area but everything is made in Mexico. I am sure there is more than one company doing that. Before DL did this you pretty much had to take AA through DFW to get to McAllen.

MFE is only about 1 - 2 hours from Monterrey. For the right price, they could capture some of that market.

It could be a potential through flight to MEX or MTY. CO currently sends one ERJ a day from IAH to MEX via MFE. Perhaps DL will be setting up a similar situation from LAX...LAX-MFE-MEX, crew swap, MEX-MFE-LAX. Not as nice as going LAX-MEX nonstop on a 738, but a good start.

Definitely an odd route... wonder how long it will be around.

well - i would have used it every week 4 years ago if they had run it - it used to to be so tough to get to my outstation in McAllen from Los Angeles - invariably an overnight in SAT and then the day-return on WN SAT-HRL-SAT the following day - a real pain just for 1 meeting! HRL is close enough, but still an inconvenience when you really want to be in MFE.

I don't know that South Padre Island is such a draw for the LA market - it's more likely the businesses and industry in the RGValley on both sides of the border.

IIRC the early a.m. CO service MFE-IAH was basically full of Mexican nationals making connections to US and international destinations - I can see the same happening on this route: all going on to LAX to catch KE connections to Asia - not to mention the rest of the Rio Grande Valley avoiding the CO IAH two-step or the AA DFW two-step

talking of 'odd' routes, up till its merger TW operated AUS-MFE-AUS as a tag on once daily from an STL-AUS service which IIRC remained overnight at MFE: that always struck me as an odd airline/route combination...

People tend to underestimate the customer base in the Valley ... true, it's served by three airports, but MFE is by far the largest (although HRL competes with the WN traffic).

The McAllen metropolitan area had 570,000 people in the 2000 census, and I'm sure that number has increased dramatically in the past six years. Meanwhile, the Brownsville area had about 335,000, so I'm sure the two metros combined have passed the 1 million mark. And that doesn't count Reynosa, Matamoros, etc. on the other side of the border -- I'm sure DL thinks there's some money to be made in this large market.
