United Repaint Update

Wed Apr 25, 2007 12:02 pm

Well...I thought UA was close to completion in repaint of the fleet in the new colors. That is, until I xfr'd on UA @ ORD yesterday....much of the 763 fleet @ the C-even gates (Europe) was in the new paint; but otherwise the new scheme only graced an occasional 737 and 2 of 3 777s (777UA and 772UA!).

Not only the old scheme--but flying ABQ-ORD (E70), we parked next to a 735 in the 'Shuttle by United' scheme. How long has that shuttle been defunct?

It looks like the last update was in February United Livery Repainting Update - 3 Years (by United787 Feb 9 2007 in Civil Aviation) so...have they made any progress since then?

Anyone know of a planned completion date for UA's fleet? Are they up to 50% yet?

Footnote: Several of the LD-3s not only had UAs 'old' blue/grey logo, but the logo from the 70s/80s 'Rainbow' scheme...

Well, at this point, some of the repainted aircraft need to be re-painted again. They're starting to peel, so it may be a LONG time before the whole fleet is done.

I know that UA is planing to do a retro paint job on one of each type of their aircraft. I was told it was supposed to be like the old livery with the white fuselage with the blue and red tulip logo on the tail, and blue United letters. Personally as neat as that sounds, they should focus on repainting the rest of their fleet. Most all of the express carriers are finished painting their aircraft. Maybe UA is working them too hard and they just dont have time to stop by for paint?

I noticed a thread about that, but no official press release. Is UA going to do this or not? If they are, you'd think they'd put out a press release with pictures, if possible. US Airways did when they announced their heritage planes, which look absolutely terrific.

777 in the "Friendship" scheme, pre-1974
747-400 in the "Rainbow" scheme...some of the earlier 744's were delivered in this scheme
767-300 remaining in the Steve Wolf scheme (dark blue/grey)

Personally, I think the 763 in the battleship grey is a BAD idea...while #175 was a 762, I think for a lot of people it will remind them of #175.  Sad I would have rather seen a 744 in the Friendship scheme, and maybe an A320 in the Rainbow.

My plane, N174UA, has been repainted in the new colors.

much of the 763 fleet

If I'm not mistaken, all of United's domestic B763s are still flying in the old colors, and that's the same for their domestic B772s. Spotting a new liveried aircraft in HNL isn't too common (you'll see them in the morning for the Japan flights).

With the summer schedule, UA are going to be working the metal big time so its no surprise if the repainting slows down now. Also one has to also take into consideration that come year end, they are going to be installing the new F & J seats on the international fleet so does it does not make sense for that to be done at the same time as the repaint job??

None of the domestic widebodies have been painted. UA has no spare aircrafts so pulling especially a domestic widebody out means either cancelling the flight, or juggling an equipment augmentation (perhaps 2 757s to cover 1 777 flight). It seems as though the 747s are the most "active" fleet being repainted. I've noticed a few new 744s in blue:

N193UA (8193)
N105UA (8105)
N117UA (8117)
N122UA (8122)

Unimatic shows N178UA booked for maintence for the rest of April, so I'm guessing this is the next to be painted.

777s:
N217UA (2617)
N219UA (2619)
N774UA (2374)

You are right though (OP) I think most of the international 763s have been repainted. I believe that only the PS branded 757s have the new paint, and there are too many Airbus/737s to keep track of.

I know at least 2 non-ps 757s have been painted, I saw them at ORD two weeks ago.

I doubt more than a handful have been re-painted. Most of the express carriers carriers a/c in the new scheme are a/c new to the system since the new livery.

I've seen a couple 737's in ROC in new colors that are already peeling the white paint along the top, kind of a shame. Some of the grey planes look better than the new color birds!

OO Painted most ALL of their 700's that they had before the new scheme came out. Personally they are letting their 120's go to hell. YV has the most 200's and 700's in the NEW UA colors and they have some of the oldest a/c in the UAX fleet. (Most likely cuz the YV planes are in for maintenance the most!  laughing .)

Yeah, it's the 737s that are peeling the worst. That's what I've seen peeling in BIL.

UA has not purchased new LD2/3's since before 2000. They do refurbish damaged cans, but painting is not included.

OO plans on completely converting their 120 fleet to the in house color scheme so they can transfer the aircraft between the two (United and Delta) systems more easily.

Almost all of the ERJ 145s entered the United Express fleet after the paint change, so that is why they are in the new colors. There are a few grey ones out there. The E170s have all been delivered since the new scheme came out. The CRJ-700s mostly joined the fleet in the new colors. Where you see repainting is when you see CRJ-200s and prop planes. Mesa has been repainting. Skywest has a very grey CRJ-200 fleet. And like was said, the EMB 120s were going back to the Skywest colors.

That's kind of wrong to say since yes they have spare aircraft because they get repainted in the new colors during the heavy maintenance D check I believe. UA does have spare aircraft because the heavy checks take more than just overnight changes. They can take up to three weeks on some planes I believe. I believe that the time period for when the domestic 777s and 767s entered the fleet means that they haven't been due for the maintenance. There are international configured 763s in the new livery.

Haha. Yeah, I was on an OO flight from BIL-SLC (DL Connection) a couple months back, and the flight attendant, who must have been accustomed to flying from BIL on the UA run, welcomed us all aboard "United Express flight 6593 to Denver, operated by SkyWest Airlines." It was amazing how many people thought they had gotten on the wrong plane.

Actually, I've seen a bunch of rehabilitated LD3s with the new UNITED logo and lettering.

I'm aware of that, my point was that there are no domestic widebodies sitting around SFO/LAX- except in the middle of the night. Those planes are dedicated to Island trips and domestic repositioning everyday. If one goes down for MX a day in advance, service will have to be adjusted with either 2 757s or a 757/767- or a 744 (HNL only) if one is available.

I do agree though, age is another issue. Domestic widebodies are less than 10 years old.

I was thinking the same thing  Smile The United Blue C/S might enjoy 5 years in its entirety (the whole fleet in the scheme) before something else is introduced.

FWIW, I happened to notice that while at ORD on Sunday, UA's N383UA (a 733) has been repainted but is peeling on top above the first class section and behind the tailplane. Sad - the new scheme looks so good.
